A BOUT 20 Winnipeg police officers
and two sniffer dogs searched
the West End on Thursday with
the gruesome goal of finding more evidence
about a serial killer.
They scoured yards and bushes,
looked over fences and peered in garbage
cans as part of a ground search
for clues tied to alleged killer Shawn
Lamb, charged this week with the
homicides of three women.
Const. Jason Michalyshen said police
searched an area in the West End between
Maryland and Arlington streets
and Ellice and Notre Dame avenues.
He said these locations were chosen
because of where the bodies of two of
Lamb's alleged victims were found.
Michalyshen would not say if officers
searched for another body.
" There is an element of unknown to
what we could find," he said.
" In light of what we found over the
past week. and because of the recent
arrest and information we have gathered,
we believe this is the best way to
move on and move forward with this
investigation."
Lamb, a 52- year- old drifter and career
criminal, was charged Monday
with three counts of second- degree
murder in the deaths of Lorna Blacksmith,
Carolyn Sinclair and Tanya Nepinak.
On Thursday, West End resident
Charlie watched her three- year- old
daughter Bella play as police sifted
through her garbage bins in the alley
behind her home.
" I don't want to raise my kids around
here," said Charlie as she sat on her
front porch watching Bella play with a
doll.
" I grew up around this crime and I
don't want the same for my daughter.
I'm moving away the first chance I
get."
The body of Sinclair, 25, was found
in March in a Dumpster in a back lane
near Notre Dame Avenue and Toronto
Street. The body of Blacksmith, 18,
was discovered near a Dumpster and
wrapped in plastic.
Nepinak, 31, was last seen around
Sherbrook Street and Ellice Avenue on
Sept 13. The search for her body is ongoing.
Tanya Roberts had her back lane
searched Thursday by police. Roberts
said she remembers the day police
found Sinclair's body less than a block
from her home.
" You could smell the body for days,
but we all just thought it was garbage
or something rotten," she said.
Russell Grisdale, who has lived in the
West End all his life, was rebuilding
the fence around his house on Home
Street while police dogs barked in the
distance. He said there is crime in the
neighbourhood and he never lets his
children out of his sight because he's
afraid of " bad people."
But Grisdale maintained these types
of crimes don't only happen in the West
End. " It's happening all over the city.
There are probably crimes everywhere
that police haven't found out about yet,
not just here, not just in the West End,"
said Grisdale.
Police said the neighbourhood search
may continue today.

A romp with a young stranger he
brought home. A forced kiss coupled
with a chilling threat. Chronic drug
and alcohol abuse.
Accused serial killer Shawn Lamb's
so- called love life left a trail of dysfunction
through the Winnipeg court
system, documents obtained by the
Free Press show.
Two former girlfriends filed for protection
orders against Lamb, with one
of them being successful. Lamb, in
turn, filed for two orders of his own and
also obtained one.
The supporting affidavits in each
case add to a troubling picture of Lamb
that has emerged this week.
He's accused of killing three young
women over the past nine months. Police
continue to probe whether he is
linked to any other unsolved homicides
across Canada.
The first document was filed in 2000
by a woman who said she feared for her
life after her brief relationship with
Lamb ended.
" He has been verbally and emotionally
abusive to me while in and out of
jail," she said in her affidavit. " He is
a heavy drinker and does drugs. I am
against that behaviour."
She said the final straw came when
Lamb brought home an intoxicated
woman " for the purpose of more drinking
and sex." She called police to have
them both removed, but claims Lamb
returned later and tried to break in.
" I am afraid for my safety as well as
for my children," she said. The order
was granted, forbidding Lamb from
having any contact with her.
The next application occurred in
2003, when another of Lamb's ex- girlfriends
said he was stalking, threatening
and intimidating her.
" He pushed me against a wall. He
wasn't moving for me. He forced me to
kiss him right at the door," she said, adding
he also threatened her safety. The
woman's application was dismissed,
as was one Lamb had previously filed
against her, saying she'd attacked him.
" She assaulted me with a frying pan,"
said Lamb. He claimed the woman was
jealous because he'd moved on to a new
relationship. However, Lamb obtained
a protection order against that new
girlfriend in early 2004, saying she was
making " malicious threats" and " false
allegations" against him.
In other court documents, Lamb
discussed three serious adult relationships
that failed - all of which ended
in domestic violence and alcohol and
drug abuse.
