On Monday night, a nine- year- old girl from a Fort Garry neighbourhood ran for help after a truck stopped beside her and two young men tried to lure her inside. The incident happened about 8: 45 p. m. when she and two friends were walking in the 1200 block of Beaumont Street. Her friends were a short distance away when a vehicle pulled up beside her, the passenger door opened and the passenger said, " Come on, get in." The driver then said, " Yeah get in." A third man in the rear didn't say anything, police said. The girl ran to her friends and all three fled to the home of one of them and told a parent, who contacted police. The truck is described as black, with three windows in the rear ( sliding window), and possibly a two- door. The three men are possibly Caucasian, with medium builds, short brown hair and in their late teens or early twenties. Anyone with information on the incident or the identity of the suspects is asked to contact investigators at 204- 986- 2877 or Crime Stoppers at 204- 786- TIPS ( 8477). Police ask parents to speak with their children about personal safety and discuss proper actions when faced with these types of situations. Suspect held in stabbing WINNIPEG police have arrested and charged a 24- year- old Winnipeg man in the stabbing of a 24- year- old woman and the physical assault of another female last Sunday in the 300 block of Young Street. The woman, who was stabbed in the upper body at about 3: 30 a. m., was taken to hospital in critical condition but was later upgraded to stable condition. Medical attention was not needed for the second female. Police said the stabbing took place during an argument between a man and the two victims. The suspect fled after stabbing the 24- year- old woman. Manuel Joseph Craveiro has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, assault and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He is being held at the Winnipeg Remand Centre. Young girls flee luring attempt by men in a pickup FELINES, chickens and snakes top the agenda at city hall as council gathers for the final time before its six- week summer break. In a welcome departure from other July meetings, there are no last- minute property deals or other walk- on proposals to give councillors - and Winnipeg voters - fits going into the legislative downtime known as the summer prorogation. The most contentious item on today's council agenda is Winnipeg's long- delayed package of new rules governing pets and exotic animals. It includes a plan to license cats and new rules for exotic animals. Other significant items on today's agenda include a new labour deal for city middle managers, a downtown lane closing that will clear the way for a new hotel tower near Portage and Main and a $ 7.8- million package for downtown residential improvements. In recent years, the July meeting has tended to be the longest and wildest of the year, with contentious issues requiring hours of debate, such as the Parker land swap ( 2009), the onceplanned dissolution of Winnipeg's water and waste department ( 2009), the reduction of mosquito- fogging buffer zones ( 2010), additional spending on the city's new police headquarters ( 2011) and the potential lease of golf courses ( 2012). This summer, Mayor Sam Katz's office worked with senior city staff to ensure contentious reports, especially on property matters, made it to council earlier in the year or could be held until September, when council committee meetings resume. But there will be some debate at today's meeting, not all of it involving cats, chickens and reptiles. Charleswood- Tuxedo Coun. Paula Havixbeck alone plans to introduce three motions: one to offer police free parking at their new headquarters, a second to increase the number of police officers in schools in 2014 and a third to apply new city rules on council spending to the mayor's office. - Bartley Kives New rules on pets top item on council's pre- break list B_ 03_ Jul- 17- 13_ FP_ 01. indd B3 7/ 16/ 13 10: 18: 46 PM ;
