T O R O N T O . The Toronto stock market
closed higher Wednesday with the focus
mainly on central banks, as the Bank of
Canada left its key rate unchanged and the
Federal Reserve offered reassurances on
economic stimulus.
The S& P/ TSX composite index closed up
51.88 points to 12,568.77, with strong support
from base metal stocks as investors
continued to buy up oversold miners.
The Canadian dollar was down 0.45 of
a cent to US96.02 as the Bank of Canada
kept its key rate unchanged at 1% and indicated
it is in no rush to raise rates.
U. S. indexes were slightly higher amid
remarks from Federal Reserve chairman
Ben Bernanke that the Fed could slow the
pace of a key element of economic stimulus
later this year if the economy strengthens.
But he cautioned that the Fed wants
to see substantial progress in the job market
before scaling back its US$ 85- billion in
monthly bond purchases.
The Dow Jones industrial average
gained 18.67 points to 15,470.52, the
Nasdaq rose 11.5 points to 3610 and the
S& P 500 index gained 4.65 points to
1680.91.
Tech stocks lifted the TSX as BlackBerry
Ltd. improved by 15 to $ 9.64.

NEW YORK - KFC is tossing out the
bones and the quaint image of founder
Col. Harland Sanders as it gets ready
to test a slightly more upmarket restaurant.
The fried chicken chain says it's
opening a location called " KFC eleven"
early next month near its headquarters
in Louisville, Ky., that will
serve flatbreads with toppings, rice
bowls, salads and only boneless pieces
of its Original Recipe chicken.
The restaurant's exterior won't
feature Sanders, whose bespectacled,
white- bearded likeness has long been
front and centre at traditional KFC
locations. But the name of the test
restaurant is a reference to the 11
herbs and spices Sanders used in the
Original Recipe.
KFC eleven's opening is a reflection
of the challenges facing traditional
fast- food chains such as McDonald's,
Burger King and Wendy's. The
problem is people in their 20s and 30s
are increasingly heading to upscale
chains, where they feel they get better
food for slightly higher prices.
In a note to investors about KFC's
test, Janney analyst Mark Kalinowski
said such " fast- casual" chains remain
the fastest- growing segment in the
restaurant industry. He noted other
chains, included Applebee's and Red
Lobster, have recently started testing
similar formats as well.
Self- destructing phones?
URBANA, Ill. - Imagine this: There's
no need to throw out your old cellphone,
because it will self- destruct.
That's the idea behind a project at
the University of Illinois at Urbana-
Champaign, where researchers are
investigating how to build electronics
that vanish in water.
John Rogers is a professor of materials
science and engineering at
the university. Rogers says the goal
of the " born to die" program is to
design transient technology that can
dissolve at the end of its useful life,
thus saving space in landfills and reducing
waste.
The research team isn't there yet.
But it has designed a chip built on a
thin film of silk that dissolves when hit
with water.
Camry's title on the line
DETROIT - America's top- selling car
is in danger of losing its title.
Toyota's Camry has been No. 1 for
more than a decade, but the company
is being forced to cut prices to keep it
there.
Camry sales fell two per cent from
January through June. Meanwhile, its
main rivals in the midsize- car market
- the Honda Accord, Nissan Altima
and Ford Fusion - posted big gains.
The hot- selling Accord cut the
Camry's lead to just below 21,000 at
the end of June. At the same time last
year the gap was 59,000.
Toyota is lowering prices to boost
Camry sales.
In early July, the Camry's average
sales price was the lowest of the nine
top- selling midsize cars, according to
data from J. D. Power and Associates
obtained by The Associated Press.
