This is partly because most of us cool kids will be hanging out at the annual Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival and The Weather Column has been personally enlisted to help introduce some of the exceedingly cool acts tonight on the outdoor stage. Another key factor in us becoming even cooler than normal is the fact it is not going to be nearly as ( bad word) hot. If you visit Environment Canada's website, you will see a lot of cute, cartoon- style suns with barely a whiff of clouds in the forecast. Still, today's outlook calls for a daily high of only 19 C, which is seven full degrees below the normal high of 26 C at this fringing time of year. On Sunday, we're looking at nothing but sun and a slightly toastier high of 25 C. The rest of the week looks much the same, although the high could sneak up to 27 C by Thursday, assuming we can survive this cold snap until then. Despite these brutal below- normal temperatures, I recommend that everyone head outside this weekend, because we are a hardy race of people who enjoy getting our fringe on. Speaking of which, you definitely need to take in some of the 169 shows at 32 venues in this year's festival, which runs until July 28. Tickets are $ 10 and available at the door, the box office at 174 Market Ave., or online at www. winnipegfringe. com. I will be " chilling" at the outdoor stage tonight helping the swashbuckling Gord Tanner introduce some cool acts such as singer/ songwriter Jeremy Wells, " Dandyman" the Aussie physical comedian and, hopefully, Lisa Lottie the Dutch " hulahoopist." If hula hoops aren't your thing, don't forget this weekend is the annual Morris Stampede & Exhibition, featuring everything from bareback riding and steer wrestling to broncobusting, chuckwagon races and rodeo clowns. There will also be food, rides, an agricultural fair and people with cowboy hats and belt buckles the size of recreational vehicles. Closer to home, grab the family and hike down to The Forks today from 10 a. m.- 4 p. m. for " Learn to Camp," a day devoted to teaching us urban dwellers everything we need to know to enjoy a, quote, " classic Canadian camping experience." Staff and volunteers from Parks Canada, Mountain Equipment Co- op, Scouts Canada and les Scouts franco- manitobain will be holding workshops on everything from setting up a tent to cooking in the campsite and campfire singalongs. If you're lucky, you'll also learn how to crush mosquitoes with a Coleman Stove. Escape the concrete jungle and enjoy some hip tunes from Dave Lawton amid the flowers, fountains and art of the Leo Mol Sculpture Garden Sunday at 3. p. m. You can keep ratcheting up the cool factor in the evening with Sunday Night Smooth Jazz at the Lyric Theatre in Assiniboine park, starting at 7 p. m. with Nick Colionne. And if you happen to see an extremely cool guy, walk over and say hello. Because I'll be standing right next to him. doug. speirs@ freepress. mb. ca YOUR WEEKEND weather with Doug Speirs CANADA POST SALES AGREEMENT NO. 0563595 Recycled newsprint is used in the production of the newspaper.
