THE road to recovery for defenceman
Zach Redmond will travel
through Winnipeg for another
season.
The Winnipeg Jets announced
Saturday that they have re- signed
the 24- year- old restricted free
agent to a one- year, two- way contract.
Redmond had one goal and three
assists in just eight games with the
Jets in 2012- 13, his first year in the
NHL.
Abrupt end
But his season came to an abrupt
end on Feb. 21 when his right femoral
artery and vein were cut by
a teammate's skate during a team
practice at PNC Arena in Raleigh,
N. C.
Redmond was rushed to hospital
where doctors stitched the wound
closed during a three- hour surgery,
but not before the defenceman had
lost dangerous amounts of blood.
A Jets team doctor would later
describe Redmond's recovery as
" miraculous" when the player
returned to the ice barely six weeks
later.
Redmond did not play again for
the Jets last season, but he did play
in two games in St. John's with the
American Hockey League's Ice-
Caps to end the season.
The Jets said in a statement on
Saturday that Redmond's deal will
pay him $ 715,000 at the NHL level
in 2013- 14.
A seventh- round draft pick of the
Atlanta Thrashers in 2008, Redmond
has 16 goals, 34 assists and 71
penalty minutes in 113 career AHL
games.

AROUND
The NHL
PHILADELPHIA Flyers general manager
Paul Holmgren has done a lot of
thinking about the future recently.
First he got rid of Ilya Bryzgalov in
favor of younger goalie Steve Mason.
Next, he extended his captain,
Claude Giroux,
for the next
eight years.
On Saturday,
he locked up
20- year- old
Sean Couturier
to a two- year
contract extension
worth $ 3.5
million.
The $ 1.75
million cap hit
is friendly for
the Flyers, who
always have to think about the salary
cap thanks in part to Giroux's $ 8.275
million cap hit starting in the 2014- 15
season. It's a slight raise for Couturier,
who had a hit of $ 1.375 million on
his entry- level contract.
Couturier had a superb rookie
season, but his offensive production
dropped to four goals and 15 points
in 46 games. He had 13 goals and
27 points in 77 games in the 2011- 12
season.
Blues, Stewart reach deal
ST. LOUIS - The St. Louis Blues
and forward Chris Stewart avoided
arbitration and agreed to terms on a
two- year contract.
The 25- year- old Stewart was a
restricted free
agent after
leading the team
in scoring. He
played in all
48 games and
had 36 points,
including 18
goals. Stewart
was scheduled to
have an arbitration
hearing on
Monday that
now isn't necessary.
Stewart has 100 goals and 202 points
in 319 career NHL games, including
48 goals and 89 points in 153 games
with the Blues. Stewart was acquired
by St. Louis with defenceman Kevin
Shattenkirk from the Colorado Avalanche
in 2011 for former No. 1 overall
pick Erik Johnson.
Blue Jackets sign pair
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Columbus
Blue Jackets have signed defenceman
Blake Parlett and forward Spencer
Machacek to one- year, two- way ( NHL/
AHL) contracts.
The 24- year- old Parlett was acquired
from the New York Rangers
along with Marian Gaborik and Steven
Delisle on April 3, 2013, in exchange
for Derek Dorsett, Derick Brassard,
John Moore and a sixth- round draft
pick in 2014. In 76 AHL games last
season, he had eight goals and 24 assists.
Machacek, also 24, was acquired
from the Winnipeg Jets on March 10,
2013, for forward Tomas Kubalik.
Atlanta's first pick, 67th overall, in the
2007 NHL draft, he had two goals and
seven assists in 25 career games with
the Jets/ Thrashers franchise. The
right- winger has also appeared in 359
AHL games, scoring 98 goals with 141
assists.
Coyotes pick up Yip
GLENDALE, Ariz. - The Phoenix
Coyotes have signed forward Brandon
Yip to a one- year contract.
Yip played 34 games for Nashville,
scoring three goals with five assists.
In parts of four NHL seasons with
Nashville and Colorado, the 28- yearold
has played in 172 games, with 29
and 27 assists. He has also three goals
and three assists in 16 playoff games.
Terms of the deal announced Friday
were not disclosed.

C ALGARY - Third- string quarterback Bo
Levi Mitchell led the Stampeders in an
enormous comeback on Saturday as Calgary
stormed back from a 24- point deficit for a
38- 27 victory over the Montreal Alouettes.
The Alouettes suffered their third straight
loss under new head coach Dan Hawkins and
are 1- 3. The Stampeders are 3- 1.
Jon Cornish had a pair of second- half touchdowns
and Mitchell led two decisive drives
after coming
on for starter
Kevin Glenn,
who injured his
shoulder in the
third quarter.
Mitchell finished
with a pair of TD passes on 7- of- 12 throwing
for 49 yards.
Glenn was starting for the second straight
week in place of Drew Tate, who strained a
muscle in his right arm in a loss to the Saskatchewan
Roughriders July 5.
It looked like Montreal was going to take out
its offensive frustration on the Stampeders
after coming off back- to- back losses at home,
including a 22- 14 loss to Calgary last week. The
normally explosive Anthony Calvillo- led Montreal
offence scored only 11 points in a defeat at
the hands of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers the
week before that.
The Alouettes put up three touchdowns and a
field goal off an interception to open up a 24- 0
lead after one quarter.
Drives of 82 and 79 yards were capped off by
Brandon Whitaker's two- yard scoring run and
S. J. Green's catch- and- run for a 59- yard score.
Jerome Messam ran in from four yards and
Sean Whyte was good on a 42- yard field goal.
Calgary woke up and dominated the rest of
the way.
Mitchell, who saw spot duty in the game before
Glenn's injury, lobbed a one- yard TD pass
to Tim St. Pierre. Glenn found Nik Lewis with
a five- yard strike. Rene Parades kicked field
goals of 27 and 41 yards.
Montreal failed to earn a down on a 3- and- 1
on their own 30 early in the third quarter and
never recovered. Messam was stopped up the
middle. Paredes then kicked a 28- field goal to
cut Calgary's deficit to 24- 22.
The Stampeders took the lead for good with
4: 57 left in the third quarter. Mitchell found
Cornish with an 11- yard scoring pass to finish
off a 89- yard drive for a 28- 24 advantage.
Mitchell came on when Glenn was rocked by
Aaron Lavaris when delivering a 45- yard pass
to Marquay McDaniel that extended that drive.
The Alouettes looked like they would get the
lead back on the ensuing kickoff. Noel Devine
was about to cross the Calgary goal- line on the
return but Fred Bennett punched the ball loose
and it was recovered in the end zone by Alvin
Bowen.
The Stampeders drove again right away and
Cornish ran in his second touchdown from 21
yards out. He finished with 109 yards on 11
rushing attempts.
Whyte followed with a 26- yard field goal.
