GEORGE HESHKA , LONGTIME PRINCIPAL OF SISLER HIGH SCHOOL, ON HIS APPOINTMENT TO THE ORDER OF MANITOBA THIRTEEN NEW MEMBERS INDUCTED INTO THE ORDER OF MANITOBA Monday, July 15, 2013 O n Monday, July 15, 2013, 13 new members were inducted by Lt.- Gov. Philip Lee into the Order of Manitoba at a formal investiture ceremony held at the Manitoba Legislative Building. “ I am very pleased to name this year’s exceptional men and women recommended for investiture in the order,” said Lee, who is Chancellor of the Order of Manitoba. This year’s inductees included the 12 women and men selected this year – David Chartrand, Dr. Francis Patrick Doyle, Olga Fuga, Helen Granger Young, George Nicholos Heshka, Dr. Tse Li Luk, Diane Redsky, Sanford ( Sandy) Riley, Dr. Allan Ronald, The Honourable Richard J. Scott, Ray St. Germain and Eleanor Woitowicz – and Miriam Toews, a 2011 appointee to the Order of Manitoba who was unable to attend previous ceremonies. “ You can take pride in your new designation and in the knowledge that your actions have earned respect and well- deserved recognition,” Lee said of the inductees. “ You are outstanding citizens and your contributions to our province are greatly appreciated. Thank you for making a difference and best wishes on this very special occasion.” Established in 1999 under special legislation, the Order of Manitoba is the province’s highest honour. It recognizes individuals who have demonstrated excellence and achievement in any field of endeavour, benefiting in an outstanding manner the social, cultural or economic well- being of Manitoba and its residents. “ The women and men invested into the Order of Manitoba this year epitomize the outstanding qualities of good citizenship characterized by order members. Whether their efforts have been recognized at the local, national or international levels, they have each demonstrated an outstanding commitment to community and set an excellent example for others to follow,” said Lee. All nominations come from the public and are evaluated by an independent advisory council that evaluates all nominations received and then recommends up to 12 candidates each year to the chancellor. Once inducted into the order, members may use the initials O. M. after their names for life. The Order of Manitoba investiture ceremony is held each year on or about the date Manitoba entered Confederation ( July 15, 1870). The chancellor presents each member with the insignia of the Order of Manitoba and members are presented with a medal in the shape of a stylized crocus, the provincial floral emblem, bearing the shield of Manitoba’s coat of arms surmounted by the Crown. They also receive a lapel pin and a certificate. Any Canadian citizen who is a current citizen of the province of Manitoba, or who was a longtime resident of Manitoba, can be nominated for membership in the Order, except Members of Parliament, s e n a t o r s , Members of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba and Judges of any court, while they are in office. Posthumous nominations are not accepted except where a nominee dies after being recommended by the Council. Only individuals may be nominated. We would like to congratulate all 13 highly deserving Manitobans for their remarkable vision, passion, hard work and dedication which is an inspiration to all in this province. “ I am very pleased to name this year’s exceptional men and women recommended for investiture in the order.” B_ 08_ jul- 22- 13_ FP_ 01 1 7/ 21/ 13 1: 38: 22 AM ;
