At 5- 4, the Chilean- born artist exudes a sort of warmth and compassion that can be felt almost immediately upon entering her studio. She gives hugs to everyone she meets, even strangers. Luna isn't afraid to proclaim art is her life and her heart is always open. So five years ago, when her niece became ill with cancer, it seemed only natural for her to want to paint a mural in her loved one's bedroom to help fill her with hope. " Immediately my mom was like, ' Honey, you could do this for other kids,' " beams Luna. And thus was born the Dream Room Project, a non- profit organization Luna runs, which transforms children's bedrooms, as well as rooms in community organizations, into magical spaces of healing. The belief is having a safe place to feel comfort and happiness can help a child heal from the pain of a traumatic experience and face the future with strength. " Any child who is going through a dark time - whether it be struggling with an illness, or impacted by a divorce, bullying, sexual abuse - deserves to have a space of their own where they feel free to feel, to dream, to hope," says Luna. She says the process for coming up with a theme for a child's bedroom is straightforward. " I ask the child what they want, and usually kids will answer right away, ' I like Buzz Lightyear, or I like princesses,' " Luna says with a laugh. At times, the bedroom murals can take days or even weeks to paint. Luna says she feels so privileged to be let into people's homes during what can often be one of the toughest times for a family. " It can be quite intimate," says Luna. " But for someone like myself who craves family, it is special." She recalls painting the room of a three- year- old girl who was struggling with cancer, decorating her walls with princesses. The little girl was in between treatments, and her family would invite Luna for dinner after a hard day's work of painting. She remembers the girl giggling and being overjoyed with the princesses painted on her wall. Her family told Luna it was the first time they had heard her laugh in a while. Luna says she keeps in touch with all the families who have got a dream room. " I always say that I have purpose in my life now because of those little souls that have shared their courage," says Luna. " It always makes you think you are stronger than you think you are." Luna admits she had a troubled childhood. " I really could have used a dream room myself," she says. At the end of each project, she videotapes the child's reaction when they see their room for the first time. " It's so I can always remember the look on their faces," says Luna, " I can say OK, this is why I do it." The Dream Room Project is run by volunteers and relies solely on donations. Luna says artists in the community sometimes volunteer their time to help paint a room, but they also are always looking for volunteers to prep the walls or make sandwiches for volunteers, among other things. Luna and the Dream Room Project have completed 22 rooms so far. Luna says her dream is to be able to do 10 times more rooms, so every child who is struggling has a safe space to dream of brighter days.
