INSIDE DEATHS LOTTERIES I F you go to Manitoba’s biggest tea party, ask about the secrets of the tea house on the old winding Montreal Road. Nancy Berry, a Winnipeg woman with roots sunk deep into the soil around the 186- kilometre two- lane highway by the Ottawa River, has donated dozens of cups from the early 1900s. Every one of them held tea served to dusty travellers, on horseback before cars and then to the rakish, the wealthy and the fashionable in roadsters and Flivers, as Fords were once called. Two of Berry’s great- aunts ran an old- fashioned tea house, called the Green Shutter, as a stop on Highway 17, now a storied scenic route along the Ottawa Valley and the St. Lawrence River that links Montreal to the national capital. The route predates the Victorian era, when Ottawa was still called Bytown and looking at the fragile cups, it’s easy to imagine they were shipped there on the Old Grand Trunk Railway, held in crates of wood and packed in straw. As it was on the main route to Montreal, the Green Shutter saw a great business as horses were watered and cars were filled with gasoline. They baked pies, biscuits and tea cakes every day to serve to customers. They also held a Sunday tea after church every week. After the tea house closed in the 1940s, the cups were part of the family’s social rituals and some were passed down to Berry. The tea party is a fundraising event for 1,500 at the Winnipeg Convention Centre Sunday, Oct. 27. It is organized by the Guardian Angel committee chaired by Fort Garry Hotel co- owner Ida Albo, for CancerCare Manitoba. alexandra. paul@ freepress. mb. ca Storied teacups to boost cancer fundraiser By Alexandra Paul ABOVE: The Green Shutter, circa 1930.
