INSIDE DEATHS OUR MISTAKE LOTTERIES T HERE is no easy way to say this, so I am just going to blurt it out - there is no future for me as a duck! I learned this fowl lesson Thursday morning when I bravely took part in the first- ever Media Duck Race in support of the Assiniboine Park Conservancy. It pitted three- member teams from various media outlets and the conservancy against one another in a relay- style race in which we were required to don gigantic scuba- style flippers, foam duck beaks, fluorescent yellow Tshirts and slotted sunglasses, then waddle about 30 yards, go around a pylon, then waddle back to our teammates. You probably think this sounds like a piece of cake, but that is only because you are a cruel, callous individual who has never been required to dress up like a duck and waddle at high speed in a public place. I will give you a quack- by- quack account of this thrilling event, but first I need to explain why we agreed to put our journalistic reputations on the line in the first place. We flocked to the park to help promote the launch of the Great Manitoba Duck Race Lottery, in which 30,000 numbered plastic ducks will be dumped into the Assiniboine River by a giant crane on Sept. 7, then float about a kilometre down the river until they reach the finish line at the Portage Avenue footbridge next to the park. Ticket- holders for the first 13 numbered ducks to finish the race will win a share of $ 50,000 in cash and prizes, with - try to follow me closely here - first prize awarded to the first duck, second prize to the second duck, and so on and so forth, if you catch our duck drift. Margaret Redmond, president and CEO of the conservancy, said all proceeds from the duck race will go to their Imagine a Place campaign that is raising funds for the $ 200- million redevelopment of the park and zoo. " The Journey to Churchill Exhibit is our fundraising priority right now," Margaret explained, trying to catch her breath after taking part in the hotly contested media challenge. " It will be the largest northern wildlife habitat in the world and will house polar bears, muskox, Arctic fox, caribou and snowy owls," she said. " The duck race is a great way for the community to support the park and zoo and have a chance to win some amazing prices." Getting back to our dramatic story, if you are a fan of highly competitive sporting events featuring finely tuned athletes, then Thursday's media duck challenge was definitely not for you. Once again, I managed to heroically lead a Free Press squad to last place. The general idea was, dressed like ducks, we were supposed to waddle as fast as possible, but in the end we moved at the speed of small jungle creatures passing through the digestive system of a mature python. If you can imagine Frankenstein's monster wearing large rubber swim fins and a foam duck beak, you will have a pretty good idea of what I looked like as I stumbled along the course in the park's nifty new Nature Playground. With every second step I took, a flipper would fly off one of my feet and randomly fling itself into a competitor on an opposing team. In the end, the coveted plastic trophy for first place went to the crew from CTV Morning Live , led by Terri Apostle, who literally got off to a flying start. " I'm pretty sure it was my ninja training plus we had an amazing team," Terri said with pride. " This ranks right up there with a cat- costume competition I once judged." Chimed in CTV teammate Nicole Dube: " We've been practising with weighted flippers for the past week. It's all in the toe- lift action. You don't want to do a face- plant with a rubber duck beak on." For his part, 103.1 Virgin Radio personality Ace Burpee, MC for the event and one of the driving forces behind the duck race lottery, acknowledged running in flippers is one of the most difficult things a modern journalist can attempt. " It's not easy," he chortled. " Nothing in life is easy." But he noted buying a ticket for one of the 30,000 ducks in the Great Duck Race is pretty simple. " I bought my duck already," he boasted. " It only took me one minute to buy it online ( at www. manitobaduckrace. com). It's the simplest thing in the world." When I asked how I looked while trying to run in duck gear, the high- energy morning host was kind. " I would describe your style as a hybrid of you having to go to the bathroom and slightly gazelle- ish," Ace chirped. Tickets for the Great Manitoba Duck Race are $ 10 each, or three for $ 25, and can be obtained online at www. manitobaduckrace. com or by calling 204- 943- DUCK. doug. speirs@ freepress. mb. ca In the Doug House Doug Speirs I'm just not ducky Flopping about with flippers tougher than it looks AARON IVES / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS Doug in the media race at the Great Manitoba Duck Race Lottery launch.  A_ 02_ Aug- 02- 13_ FP_ 01. indd A2 8/ 1/ 13 10: 41: 11 PM ;
