C ANS are king.
It should come as no surprise to
anybody who has stood in line at
a vendor or liquor store recently but
Manitobans now overwhelmingly prefer
to drink their favourite beer out of
aluminum instead of glass.
According to sales figures from the
Manitoba Liquor Control Commission,
more than 61 per cent of beer sold in
the province for the first six months of
the year came in a can. Less than 34
per cent was sold in bottles over the
same period while kegs accounted for
the remaining five per cent.
Cans are a relative newcomer to
Manitoba's beer scene - it was only a
few years ago the overwhelming majority
of beer sold here came in a bottle.
But in an industry where manufacturers
are trying to squeeze every penny
of margin possible, breweries big and
small are throwing large chunks of
their promotional budgets behind cans.
For starters, you only have to ship them
one way. They're also lighter than bottles
and can be packed more economically,
which improves transportation
efficiencies.
Consumers like them, too. There's
a little more beer in a can than an industry
standard bottle - 355 ml vs.
341 ml - cans get colder faster, they
don't break and they're easier to cart
around, particularly when the packages
are little cardboard suitcases.
It also doesn't hurt cans can be sold
in non- traditional sizes, such as 8- packs
and 15- packs, without too much difficulty.
Some elements of society are contributing
to the trends, too. The Winnipeg
Folk Festival, for example, has banned
glass bottles at Birds Hill Park.
" Cans all the way," said Chris Warwaruk,
co- owner of Luxalune Gastropub
and the Farmery Estate Brewery,
which launched Farmery beer in cans
in July, seven months after it entered
the market in bottles.
He said while beer traditionalists
now accept that craft beer can be put
in cans - an important development
he equates to wine drinkers no longer
turning their noses up at screw- cap
bottles - it's also much cheaper for
producers to install a canning line
($ 80,000) versus a bottling line ( approximately
$ 500,000).
There's also the matter that you can
pick whatever colour you want with a
can. Farmery comes in bright orange.
" If you go with glass bottle, you still
have to come up with a kick- ass label
on a brown bottle. There isn't another
orange can in the marketplace. If you
walk around a campground carrying
a can of Farmery, somebody can spot
it easily. We weren't going after the
mainstream, we wanted to make it
unique," he said.
Bill Gould, president of WETT Sales
& Distribution, which distributes beers
such as Moosehead, Carlsberg and
Samuel Adams, said Canada is following
the U. S. model, where cans have
been the dominant vessel for years.
His challenge is that many beers
in his portfolio only come in bottles.
Tennent's Lager from Scotland is already
in cans in part to make it cheaper
to ship overseas, he said.
" We follow the industry," he said.

Four years ago,
51 per cent of
the beers sold in
Manitoba liquor
stores came in
bottles while just
32 per cent were
in cans, according
to Karen Hiebert,
director of communications
for
Manitoba Liquor &
Lotteries. Today,
those numbers are
48 per cent and
36 per cent and
there's no reason
to believe they'll
reverse course.
" Craft brewers
are moving
to production
in cans instead
of bottles. That
helps to prolong
the product shelf
life by sealing the
beer from the light
and air. Air can
get through a beer
cap," she said.
