TORONTO . North American stock
markets sold off sharply Monday as a disappointing
read on American manufacturing
added to worries over whether economic
problems cropping up in emerging
markets can be contained.
The S& P/ TSX composite index gave up
the last of its gains for the year as it tumbled
208.74 points, or 1.52%, to 13,486.20.
The Canadian dollar gained US0.33 to
US90.11.
T he Dow Jones indus trial average
plunged 326.05 points, or 2.1%, to
15,372.80 as the Institute for Supply Management
said its January manufacturing
index dropped to 51.3 in January from 56.5
in December. Any reading above 50 signals
expansion. Nasdaq fell 106.92 points
to 3,996.96 while the S& P 500 index slid
40.70 points to 1,741.89.
Markets had already got off to a weak
start Monday morning after China's official
purchasing managers' index came in
at 51.5, down from 52.5 in December.
The energy sector was down 2.1% as
March crude in New York fell US$ 1.06 to
US$ 96.43.
The gold sector lost early momentum
and was down about 0.75% as risk- averse
investors pushed April gold up US$ 20.30
to US$ 1,260.40 an ounce.

Big contract for New Flyer
NEW FLYER Industries Inc. has won
a $ 138- million contract to build 276
heavy- duty, 40- foot Xcelsior cleandiesel-
powered buses for the New York
City Transit Authority.
Construction will begin in the fourth
quarter of this year and all production
buses are to be completed by the
fourth quarter of 2015.
The New York City region has the
largest transit agency in North America
with more than 5,700 transit buses
in their fleet, of which about 1,000 are
New Flyer buses. Over the last three
years, New Flyer has delivered 668
transit buses - both clean- diesel and
natural gas propulsions systems in 40-
and 60- foot configurations - and in
2013 alone New Flyer built 118 buses
or 138 equivalent units.
Homes overvalued 10%: TD
TORONTO - TD Bank is estimating
Canadian home prices are about 10 per
cent overvalued given the expectations
for rising interest rates.
The bank says a combination of
softer demand and rising supply of
homes for sale will likely pull some
steam out of home prices.
While 2014 is likely to see stable
prices on average, the bank estimated
prices should edge down by two per
cent per cent in 2015- 16.
It says markets such as Toronto,
Vancouver, Montreal and Ottawa are
likely more overvalued than markets
in the Prairie and Atlantic regions
and will likely experience more of an
impact.
The Canadian housing market and
worries about a real estate bubble have
been key concerns for policy- makers
for several years.
