Katherine Fox, a spokeswoman for the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, said the hospital is continuing to investigate problems with its airhandling systems. " Repairs and testing continue, as will simulations to ensure things are working properly. We will only open the operating rooms once we are confident that they provide the safest environment possible for patients," Fox said in an email. Meantime, she said, hospitals across the city continue to perform urgent and emergency surgeries that would have been done at St. Boniface. They are also tackling some of the elective or planned surgeries that had been scheduled at St. Boniface, the province's second- largest hospital. The hospital's operating rooms have been out of commission since early on Jan. 22. Heating and ventilation systems failed and cold air got inside, causing heating coils to freeze and crack. When the heat came back on, water from the burst coils flooded a couple of operating rooms, although most damage was confined to hallways and ancillary rooms around the ORs. The hospital quickly repaired the coils and replaced damaged ceiling tiles and drywall. But it has had more difficulty getting the ventilation system in the OR areas to operate properly. WRHA officials had originally feared it would take months to get the operating rooms back in service. But water damage turned out to be less serious than first thought and the heating coils proved repairable. Officials then said they hoped - under a bestcase scenario - to see at least some of the ORs back in service within a week or two of the shutdown. Fox said Wednesday the WRHA now expects to provide an update on the situation " later in the week." Meanwhile, as of this past Friday, 266 elective or scheduled surgeries at St. Boniface had been postponed. Surgeries for 20 patients had been delayed at other hospitals due to bumping by the most serious cases from St. Boniface. Wayne Trylinski, 52, returned to provincial court Wednesday to learn his fate. Judge John Guy convicted Trylinski and sentenced him to a 12- month conditional discharge. He won't have a criminal record if he successfully completes one year of supervised probation. Trylinski pleaded not guilty to uttering threats toward his boss and a colleague while speaking with another colleague in the parking lot of a regional office on Island Shore Boulevard in November 2012. Guy ruled Trylinski had the required mental state to commit the offence when he showed a handgun to the colleague and threatened to storm the office if work- related issues that had left him frustrated weren't dealt with. " He basically told me that he was going to storm into the office, and he was going into ( the colleague's) office and he was going to take care of the f'n problem - and when I heard the pops going off in the office I should run to the front door," Robert Dalkie testified at a December trial. He was the sole witness in the case. Trylinski also threatened to do the same to their boss, Dalkie testified. At first Dalkie thought Trylinski - known for " showboating" - was just joking around, but then thought things went too far when the gun was shown. Guy said it was " crucial" to his ruling Dalkie took steps the next day to read Trylinski the " riot act" and had talked to another colleague and a relative about what happened. It was that colleague who ultimately took steps that resulted in Trylinski's arrest and suspension from work. Dalkie's actions showed " he could no longer sort of shrug this off as a joke," said Guy. " I'm of the view that the only inference that can be drawn from these facts is that the mens rea ( mental element) has been established," the judge said. Looking at all the circumstances, Guy said, Trylinski meant his words to be taken seriously. Trylinski argued anything he said was meant only in jest and he had no intention of carrying out the threat. Guy was told at trial police remained present outside the Investors Group office for weeks. Defence lawyer Dan Manning said Trylinski's case and the publicity it has received has been an immense consequence for him and he " obviously regrets" what happened. THE federal government has seen its coffers bolstered by more than $ 400,000 in cash found in a vehicle as part of a Winnipeg police takedown of a major cocaine ring. A Manitoba judge has ordered that $ 402,570 police found in vacuumsealed packages recovered from Peter Coffey's BMW in July 2010 be forfeited to the Crown. Police witnessed Coffey, 47, meeting with drug- trafficker Cirilo Lopez at a hotel near Portage la Prairie. They secretly watched as Lopez placed a bag in Coffey's trunk, court records state. Police tailed the BMW into Saskatchewan, where Regina police stopped the vehicle and seized the cash. Coffey was initially released without charge so as not to frustrate an ongoing major police drug investigation, dubbed project Sport Track. The investigation ultimately netted several arrests and hefty prison sentences for several individuals, including Lopez and Kosmas Dritsas, also known to police as Mike the Greek. Coffey pleaded guilty last summer to a charge of possession of stolen property resulting from drug- trafficking, after transferring his charges to British Columbia. He was sentenced to two years for his cash courier's role, but the issue of what to do with the seized money was only dealt with recently.
