He's shot at repeatedly by another robber armed with a handgun. The 64- year- old collapses and the home invaders take off, leaving him bleeding profusely and trying to get up. The black- and- white surveillance video making the rounds of Dominican Republic media outlets horrified the Winnipeg family of the victim, Les Grant Lehmann, who was trying to protect the Manitoba visitors. " It's a horrible thing to look at," said his daughter- in- law Eugenia ( Geni) Lehmann. " He had been beaten and attacked and shot at for about eight or 10 minutes prior to the video," she said. Her father- in- law tried to intervene during a Jan. 31 home invasion at the apartment complex he manages in the Dominican Republic where Manitoba school students on a humanitarian mission were staying. " We are so thankful and relieved to hear he has survived and is alive," said Eugenia who is married to Les's son, Sean Lehmann. " It is a miracle," she said. " Speaking to the doctors in the Dominican Republic, they'd never seen anyone survive nine gunshots - it's been an amazing story." The students from the Division Scolaire Franco- Manitobaine had arrived the day before the home invasion to volunteer at a nearby school and orphanage. Four girls and their female teacher were briefly held at gunpoint during the ordeal that happened about 1 a. m. on Jan 31. The surveillance video was upsetting to see but shows the strength of her father- in- law's character, said Eugenia, a mental- health counsellor with her own practice. " He was fighting for people's lives," she said. Lehmann, who had a mobile gardening service in Winnipeg called Johnny Appleseed, retired and went to the Dominican Republic. For the last six years, he's hosted the Manitobans' annual humanitarian mission at the property he managed. " I think the video speaks to his strength and desire to protect no matter what," said Eugenia. " He did everything he could to get between that door ( where the students were) and those men." On Feb. 1, the next day, all 26 members of the mission involving two francophone schools in Ste. Anne and St. Jean Baptiste arrived back in Winnipeg. The school division is reviewing the annual humanitarian mission to the Dominican Republic. Lehmann, who needs reconstructive surgery on his arm and leg shattered by gunshot wounds, is waiting for the OK from his doctors so he and his wife Lynda can return to Canada, said Eugenia. The family has set up a web page donatetoles. com for people to send messages and contribute to his recovery fund. It shows smiling pictures of Lehmann in the hospital recovering from his injuries and a link to the surveillance video with a warning about its graphic images. The response from people in the Dominican Republic who have donated blood for his recovery has been overwhelming, the web pages says. " He's out of immediate danger - it's just the long- term care we're looking at now," said Eugenia. " He'll need extensive physio and rehab for his arm and leg." She said they don't have insurance to cover the " pay as you go" treatment he's receiving in the Dominican Republic. " Our hope is trying to get him back to Canada as soon as possible," she said. " He's waiting for a fit- to- fly certificate from his doctor." Her father- in- law needs reconstructive surgery, longterm rehabilitation and to be back in Manitoba safe and sound with family, she said. " The plan is to stay in Canada." carol. sanders@ freepress. mb. ca SCAN PAGE TO SEE SECURITY VIDEO OF THE ATTACK Video of Winnipegger being shot shocks kin ' Miracle' survival after taking 9 bullets in the Dominican By Carol Sanders Les Grant Lehmann: brutal attack PHIL HOSSACK / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS Sean and Eugenia Lehmann, the son and daughter- in- law of Les Grant Lehmann, look at photos of the retired Winnipegger.
