C P Rail's asking price for its historic
train station in Minnedosa
is too rich for the heritage committee
that wants to preserve the
105- year- old building.
After years of negotiations - the
two sides twice reached verbal agreements
only to have CP Rail change its
mind, says the heritage group - the
national railway is now asking a purchase
price of $ 30,000 and a five- year
lease at $ 1,800 annually.
" We don't have that kind of capital.
Plus, we have to fix up the
building, and who knows how many
more thousands that would cost,"
said Bryan Pollon, spokesman for
the Minnedosa Heritage Committee,
which reached its decision Friday
afternoon.
The heritage group thought it had
an agreement earlier with CP Rail
and did some restoration work totalling
$ 60,000 to $ 70,000 in materials,
and $ 25,000 in volunteer labour, Pollon
said.
The last deal the committee
thought it had with CP Rail was to
purchase the building for $ 1 and
issue CP Rail a charitable tax receipt
in lieu of property taxes. That's
similar to the deal CN Rail made
with a group in Neepawa for its station
there.
Pollon has not yet contacted the
railway. CP Rail gave the group a
week to respond, as of Feb. 8.

M ORE municipalities have joined
hands under the province's mandatory
municipal amalgamation
process.
Municipal Government Minister Stan
Struthers said this week the province is
nearing completion with the mergers of
39 municipalities into 19.
Struthers has said through amalgamation,
the new, larger municipalities
will reduce red tape and the cost
of local government, and they will have
better access to provincial and federal
infrastructure funding in the coming
months.
The province says 85 of the province's
196 municipalities have fewer
than 1,000 residents and under Bill 33
are required to submit an amalgamation
plan by this spring.
The plans are expected to produce a
30 per cent reduction in the number of
municipalities outside Winnipeg.
The province's amalgamation plan
has not been without its bumps. The
Association of Manitoba Municipalities
is taking the province to court over the
issue, arguing the process should be
voluntary over a longer period of time.
The province wants the newly merged
municipal councils to take office Jan. 1,
2015, following the next general municipal
election this October.
The newly amalgamated municipalities
are:
. Rural Municipality ( RM) of Sifton and
Oak Lake forming the new RM of Sifton.
. RMs of Strathcona and Riverside forming
the new RM of Prairie Lakes.
. Village of Glenboro and RM of South
Cypress forming the new Municipality of

Creary forming the new Municipality of
