A5 SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 2014 NEWS LOCAL
A BOUT 130 hardy Winnipeggers
lined up in towels, trunks
and T- shirts - some sporting
colourful Halloween masks
and capes - to take the 2014 Polar
Plunge Saturday.
Law enforcement agencies across
North America organize the annual
event to raise money for the Special
Olympics but Winnipeg
has to be one of the coldest
provincial capitals in Canada
to host it.
The weather Saturday
clocked in at - 16 C but it felt
like - 24 with the wind chill.
The best part? Cloudy skies
gave way to the bright sun.
Matt Kilgor, in black
trunks, a T- shirt and a
yellow cape, was like many of the
129 who dared to jump. He showed
up with a crew of co- workers all
dressed alike in their wacky outfits.
And they joked a little nervously
as they eyed the vat of freezing
water outside the Indian and Mtis
Friendship Centre on Robinson
Street and the shivering survivors
dripping with water who emerged
from it.
" They said to remember to
breathe," Kilgor chuckled.
Minutes later, it was his turn and
Kilgor climbed a wooden ladder,
stood for a second on the platform
and jumped.
Inside the vat, volunteers with
the Canadian Amphibious Search
Team, kept vigil in wet suits. Nobody
needed reviving.
The event saw 129 people line up
for the 1 p. m. kick off at the Friendship
Centre.
Cars packed a three- square- block
area and metal bleachers for spectators
gave supporters a bird's- eye
perch to view the spectacle in the
parking lot off Robinson Street.
Next to the plunge, the anticipation
was probably the hardest part.
Polar plungers lined up at an open
door that faced the vat in the parking
lot outside, able to survey the
" before" and " after" for everyone
ahead of them.
Kilgor waited about 45 minutes
for the 10- second plunge.
When he emerged from the freezing
water, he was shivering with cold
and gasping for breath, unable to
utter a single word.
" It was very cold," Kilgor said
when he could talk again, toasty
warm after a breather in a green
khaki army tent. The aprs- plunge
warming shack boasted a hot tub.
The event primarily drew workers
from law enforcement and service
and specialty supply shops.
The Friendship Centre was packed
with related raffles and crowds, including
relatives and friends. Organizer
Steven Dredger, spokesman for
Special Olympics Manitoba, called
the event a success.
The 2013 event raised $ 36,000.
This year, before related raffles
were tallied in, a sum of $ 30,000
had been counted up for the Special
Olympics.
This the second year for the event
in Winnipeg, sponsored this winter
by ATCO Sustainable Communities
and Chief Peguis Construction Ltd.
CP Construction general manager
Glen Cochrane said he admired the
grit it took. " You have to have a true
heart for the cause to do something
like this," Cochrane said. " We're just
honoured to support a cause such as
this."
The charity, Law Enforcement
Torch Run, organized the event
held in Winnipeg and other cities
yesterday.
