ll he el dri U of W, profs have deal
THE University of Winnipeg and its
professors have reached a tentative
three- year collective agreement,
easing students’ fears their education
could be interrupted by a strike.
A news release on Sunday afternoon
said the deal came after three days of
mediation. The release said details of
the pact won’t be shared until it has
been ratified by the U of W Faculty
Association.
The mediator was appointed after
two days of conciliation failed to get
movement on a new deal.
The U of W has never had a faculty
strike, though it came within a few
hours of a strike in 2010. Professors
have been without a contract since
March 31, 2013.
University of Manitoba professors
earlier settled for a three- year deal
with a compounded pay increase of 7.1
per cent.
Fatal snowmobile crash
A 32- year- old man is dead after a collision
on a snowmobile north of Tyndall
Saturday.
Speed and drugs are considered factors
in the collision.
A group of riders was on a trail
four kilometres south of Highway 317,
along Provincial Road 38, when the
single- vehicle collision occurred. The
man died at the scene, said RCMP.
The investigation continues.
Burned at cooking event
A man and a woman suffered burns
at a chili cook- off event at a Winnipeg
high school Saturday.
“ Someone opened an oven door and
a fireball occurred,” a spokesman for
the Winnipeg fire department said.
Fire crews responded to the call at
2: 16 p. m. Saturday from St. Boniface
Diocesan High School at 282 Dubuc St.
A man, 66, suffered burns to his forehead
and arms. A woman, 50, suffered
burns to her arms, hair, upper torso
and face, the fire department spokesman
said. He said he had no further
details about the gas- oven incident.
Death seen as homicide
RCMP are investigating the death of a
man in a Bloodvein First Nation house
fire Saturday as a homicide.
Bloodvein RCMP responded to the
house fire at about 2: 30 a. m. on Feb. 8.
The Office of the Fire Commissioner
has attended the scene to assist in the
investigation.
An autopsy is scheduled for today in
Winnipeg.
Injuries at CN yard
TWO CN Rail employees were taken
to hospital with non- life- threatening
injuries after the van in which they

in Symington Yard Sunday morning.
A locomotive was travelling at a slow
speed in the yard at about 7: 15 a. m.
when it struck a van transporting employees,
a CN Rail spokeswoman said.
The driver and a passenger were
taken to hospital. The spokeswoman
said she had no further details.
