P ARIS - The Algerian soldier who was the sole survivor of a plane crash that the military says killed 77 others joins a group of people who carry a unique burden. Just a handful around the world share his experience - including another Algerian soldier from a 2003 crash whose name has never been released. They often cope with debilitating and isolating guilt and injuries, according to Ky Dickens, director of the documentary Sole Survivor . Dickens identified 15 sole survivors around the world. " Every lone survivor we talked to, they tended to not want to be found, not want to share their story, not want to talk about it," Dickens said. Returning from a safari The nine- year- old Dutch boy was still strapped to his seat, unconscious but still breathing, his legs shattered amid the debris scattered in the Libyan desert sand. The Afriqiyah Airways Airbus crashed on approach to Tripoli, killing 103 passengers and crew on May 12, 2010. Ruben van Assouw was travelling home from a safari with his parents and brother and learned that he was the sole survivor only days later. A photo of the injured child in his hospital bed was distributed by Libyan authorities and a Dutch tabloid managed to get into his room and interview him before he knew his family was dead. He is being raised by his uncle and aunt, who said in 2011 the boy hopes to return to Libya. " He wants to know what happened. And he wanted to show the Libyans how well he's doing," she said. Plucked from the ocean Bahia Bakari remembered little from the last moments of the Yemenia Airlines flight she took with her mother from Paris to the Comoros on June 30, 2009 - an electric shock to her body, the cries of women she could not see. Alone in the Indian Ocean darkness - 152 people died on the flight - she grabbed some debris and floated. For 10 hours, the 12- year- old stayed in the water until a passing fisherman came to her rescue. " I was without a doubt in denial, but at that moment I was certain that I was the only person who had fallen from the plane." she told French media last week. " Yes, I have scars. I am sad to have lost my mother, but my daily life is now that of a normal young girl. ... An ordinary life that suits me fine. Life must continue. You can't just let it pass you by." On the wrong runway The co- pilot of the Comair commuter jet was pulled from the broken cockpit, the only one to emerge alive from the crash in a field in Lexington, Kentucky, that killed 49 people on Aug. 27, 2006. He has said he thinks about every action of that day when the plane wound up on a runway that was far too short - as do the families of all those killed. The crash spawned a series of lawsuits, including one from the co- pilot - Jim Polehinke - who filed against the company that designed the runway and the taxiway lights. The National Transportation Safety Board found the pilots failed to notice clues they were going down the wrong runway. " I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. I've cried harder than any man has ever cried or should be able to cry," Polehinke told Dickens in the documentary. - The Associated Press BOSTON - Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was given a November trial date over the strenuous objections of his attorneys, who said Wednesday they won't have enough time to mount a defence in a terrorism case that carries a possible death penalty. The Nov. 3 trial date is nearly a year earlier than the earliest date requested by Tsarnaev's lawyers, but in line with what prosecutors had sought. " I think it is a realistic and a fair one," U. S. District Judge George O'Toole Jr. said of the schedule he set. Federal prosecutors announced last month they will seek the death penalty against Tsarnaev, who is charged in twin bombings that killed three people and wounded more than 260. Prosecutors allege Tsarnaev, 20, and his older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, built and planted two pressure cooker bombs near the finish line of the marathon last April. Tamerlan Tsarnaev died following a shootout with police. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has pleaded not guilty to 30 federal counts, including using a weapon of mass destruction. He is being held at a federal prison and was not in court for Wednesday's hearing. Several people injured in the bombings did attend, including Marc Fucarile. Fucarile, who lost his right leg above the knee, said he wished the trial would start even earlier. " Why not?" he said. " It's pretty cut and dried with the evidence. Don't waste anybody's time." - The Associated Press Sole survivor of plane wreck part of grim club By Lori Hinnant WASHINGTON - Sen. Rand Paul, a possible Republican presidential candidate, sued the Obama administration Wednesday over the National Security Agency's mass collection of millions of Americans' phone records. The senator said he and the conservative activist group FreedomWorks filed the suit for themselves and on behalf of " everyone in America that has a phone." The lawsuit argues the bulk collection program that's been in existence since 2006 violates the U. S. Constitution's Fourth Amendment right against unreasonable searches. It calls for an end to the program, which was revealed by former National Security Agency analyst Edward Snowden. The Obama administration maintains the program, begun under president George W. Bush, is legal. Courts have largely sided with the government. U. S. President Barack Obama has called for reforms to the program in an effort to regain public trust. Others, like Paul, have called for the end of this kind of surveillance. Paul dodged a question about his presidential ambitions during a news conference Wednesday. But his lawsuit is the latest effort to propel the debate over the once- secret surveillance program into the 2016 presidential campaign. The surveillance debate has exposed intra- party tensions for Republicans. The party split on this issue between its leadership, which backs the program on security grounds, and libertarian- minded members who are more wary of government involvement in Americans' private lives. The Republican National Committee last month approved a resolution to end the surveillance programs. While some Republicans played down its significance, the nonbinding vote was seen as a nod to Republicans like Paul.
