Indonesia volcano blows
SURABAYA, Indonesia - Volcanic
ash from a major eruption in Indonesia
shrouded a large swath of the country's
most- densely populated island today,
closed three international airports
and sent thousands fleeing.
First light brought clear the extent
of the overnight explosive eruption at
Mount Kelud on Java Island, though
there was no immediate word on any
casualties.
Booms from the mountain could be
heard 130 kilometres away in Surabaya,
the country's second- largest city,
and even further afield in Jogyakarta.
Ash covered the ground in both
cities and was still falling, according
to witnesses and accounts on social
media. TV footage from towns closer
to the peak showed farmyard animals
covered in ash.
Officials late Thursday urged about
200,000 people living in 36 villages
within 10 km of the crater to evacuate.
It was unclear how many people
heeded that warning, though thousands
fled when the blasts began.
Kelud is among about 130 active
volcanoes in Indonesia. The archipelagic
nation is prone to volcanic eruptions
and earthquakes because of its
location on the so- called Ring of Fire
- a series of fault lines stretching
from the Western Hemisphere through
Japan and Southeast Asia.
Marathon tribute planned
BOSTON - Boston Marathon organizers
said Thursday a tribute to victims,
survivors and first responders will be
held on the anniversary of the bombings
last year that killed three people
and injured more than 260.
The April 15 tribute will be hosted
jointly by Boston Mayor Martin Walsh
and Gov. Deval Patrick in co- ordination
with One Fund Boston, the charity
set up to help victims, the Boston
Athletic Association said.
The 118th running of the Boston
Marathon is set for April 21.
Prosecutors allege that Dzhokhar
Tsarnaev, 20, and his older brother,
Tamerlan Tsarnaev, built and planted
two pressure cooker bombs near the
finish line of the marathon. Tamerlan
Tsarnaev died following a shootout
with police several days later.
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has pleaded not
guilty to 30 federal counts, including
using a weapon of mass destruction.
He faces the death penalty at trial,
scheduled to start Nov. 3.
U. S. winter chaos continues
WASHINGTON - The latest winter
storm to hit the U. S. East Coast
grounded more than 6,500 flights
Thursday, while hundreds of thousands
in the ice- encrusted South
remained without power.
At least 21 deaths, most of them in
traffic accidents, were blamed on the
storm as it made its way across the
South and up the coast.
Among the victims was a pregnant
woman who was struck and killed by a
snowplow in New York City. Her baby
was delivered in critical condition via
cesarean section.
Washington had at least 20 centimetres,
and federal offices and the
city's two main airports were closed.
New York City had at least the same
amount.
In New York City, the teachers
union criticized Mayor Bill de Blasio's
decision to keep the schools open. The
mayor said many parents depend on
schools to watch over their children
while they are at work.
About 1.2 million homes and businesses
lost power as the storm moved
from the South through the Northeast.
By Thursday evening, about 550,000
customers remained in the dark,
mostly in South Carolina and Georgia.
Temperatures were expected to drop
below freezing again overnight.
Zimmerman countersues
ORLANDO, Fla. - George Zimmerman
has filed a countersuit against his
wife in their on- going divorce proceeding.
He also is asking a judge to set aside
a judgment in favour of his wife that
the court awarded because he didn't
answer her lawsuit.
Shellie Zimmerman filed for divorce
in September and served him
with papers while he was in jail on a
since- dropped domestic violence case
involving a former girlfriend. He says
the papers became lost in jail and he
was unable to respond until now.

N EW DELHI - A lawmaker sprayed
pepper spray inside India's parliament
on Thursday, creating chaos that left
his colleagues coughing and crying as they
were ushered from the hall, in a protest over
a long- contentious proposal to create a new
southern state.
Lawmakers had been set to vote on whether
to create Telangana state from the mostly
poor, inland districts of Andhra Pradesh. For
months as it has been drafted, the plan has
inspired passionate protests and arguments
for keeping the state unified. A key point of
contention has been the proposal to include
wealthy tech and industrial hub Hyderabad
within Telangana.
To stop the bill from coming to a vote,
Congress party lawmaker L. Rajagopal
from Andhra Pradesh unleashed pepper
spray from the main speaking zone in the
parliament.
" I have a lot of respect for Indian democracy.
I want to prevent the bill. So I pulled
the mike," Rajagopal told reporters outside
Parliament.
Several members attempted to subdue
Rajagopal, leading to a scuffle on the parliament
floor before he was eventually expelled
from the day's proceedings.
One parliament member was rushed to a
hospital, but no information was available
about his condition by late evening.
Speaker Meira Kumar adjourned the session,
calling the turmoil " a blot."
" I am too much in pain at what has happened,"
she said.
One top Congress party official, Digvijay
Singh, called it a " sad day in the history of
parliament" that had " put Indian democracy
in shame."
