H E waited all his life to return
to the village he fled as a child
when he joined thousands of
other " Lost Boys" walking from South
Sudan to safety hundreds of kilometres
away.
In December, Reuben Garang left
Winnipeg to visit his birthplace - now
part of a newly independent nation -
and reunite with loved ones scattered
by war.
The Lost Boys of Sudan is the name
given to thousands of boys displaced
and orphaned during the Sudanese civil
war that ended in 2005.
When his plane landed in Uganda
Dec. 17, he learned fighting had erupted
in South Sudan and there was no
way he could get to his village, which
is called Twic.
" It was bad news after bad news,"
said Garang, who that day also learned
his cousin died in the crossfire.
Thousands of former refugees who
thought they were back home for good
in South Sudan were forced from their
homes again, he said
Garang stayed with family in Kampala,
the capital of Uganda, and was
able to visit with his sister and brother
and their families in a refugee camp in
northern Uganda.
" It's overwhelming. It's overcrowded."
Garang said the United Nations High
Commissioner for Refugees ( UNHCR)
had little to offer the two- time refugees:
" ' This is your plot with a UNHCR
plastic sheet,' The school, the latrine
are not there. Water is brought in by
trucks," he said.
" All the children are crying. You talk
to the elderly women and they start
crying."
It was a struggle to maintain his composure,
said the 42- year- old father of
four.
" You hold on. You don't want to cry
in front of the children but you're crying
inside. You have to remain a voice
of hope for them."
In a place where there's no social
safety net, northern Ugandans share
what little they have with the refugees
from South Sudan, said Garang.
" I was so amazed by the hospitality
of these people. They share everything
they have but it's going to reach a limit."
Garang hopes the refugees can go
home before they wear out their welcome.
In the camp, people from many
different tribes and ethnicities have
had it with upheaval and want to return
to South Sudan and live in peace, said
Garang.
It's not civilians but politicians vying
for power who are at the root of fighting
in South Sudan, he said.
But the South Sudanese people, as
refugees, have no voice to advocate for
their right to return to their new country
and live in peace, he said.
" What's coming from their mouths is
' God help us, God help us,' " said Garang.
They have little faith in the Jan.
23 announcement of an agreement on
a cessation of hostilities between the
warring parties.
Garang said he wants countries
like Canada that helped South Sudan
achieve its independence to get involved
and push for a lasting peace.
The Anglican Church of Canada wrote
to Prime Minister Stephen Harper on
Jan. 24 calling for " urgent and intensified
leadership from the Government
of Canada and the international community"
to press for a lasting peace.
Soon after returning to Winnipeg,
Garang took part in a Red Cross fundraiser
for South Sudan refugees. He
recently completed a master's degree
in development practice and sustainability
and is looking for work and ways
to help the displaced people he left behind.
The former Lost Boy hasn't lost
all hope. He just needs to recover from
another traumatic journey.
" I'm not grounded yet. I can't sleep.
I'm torn apart and trying to put myself
back together."
