F IRST rain, now wind.
There are more problems with
the former Canada Post building
city hall purchased for the new police
headquarters.
A stretch of downtown Garry Street,
between Portage Avenue and St. Mary
Avenue, was closed for several hours
Thursday after reports strong winds
were blowing exterior wall tiles from
the tower of the complex.
There were no reports of injuries.
A civic spokeswoman said one aluminum
panel blew off the southeast corner
of the tower, at 266 Graham Ave.,
and was found on the sidewalk.
A second panel appeared loose, as
if it was about to fall. That portion of
Garry Street was closed for a time
Thursday but reopened later in the
evening.
The city brought crews to remove the
loose panel, and staff continued to work
to assess the integrity of the remaining
panels.
Access to the tower, where Canada
Post still occupies a couple of floors
with administrative and support staff,
was maintained throughout the day.
A spokesman for Caspian Construction,
which is responsible for the construction,
renovation and conversion
of the former warehouse portion of
the structure into the new WPS headquarters,
said the fallen panel was part
of the original tower. The spokesman
said the firm had not done any work
there and would not be involved in any
remediation work tied to Thursday’s
problems.
Police were preparing to move into
the converted warehouse in late August
when a heavy rainfall flooded the
basement and damaged at least one of
the five giant generators located in the
lower level.
Further repairs caused by the August
rainfall are expected to delay
the police service’s move into the new
building until the summer.
