A FORMER member of Greg Selinger's
cabinet says he doesn't
believe the NDP can unite around
either the premier or leadership candidate
Theresa Oswald due to the animosity
between the two camps.
Assiniboia MLA Jim Rondeau said
Thursday that's one of the main reasons
he's thrown his support behind
Thompson MLA Steve Ashton for the
leadership. He backed Selinger over
Ashton for leader in 2009.
In an interview, Rondeau said the
level of hostility between those backing
the premier and those supporting Oswald
has never been seen in the Manitoba
NDP.
" It's unprecedented, and it's personal,"
said the former healthy living and
consumer affairs minister, who was
shuffled out of cabinet by Selinger a
little over a year ago.
Rondeau said he doesn't expect a lot
can be accomplished by a new effort
led by Conservation and Water Stewardship
Minister Gord Mackintosh to
heal rifts between the Oswald and Selinger
camps. Both sides have appealed
to Mackintosh to broker a truce so the
NDP can focus on fighting and winning
the next election in April 2016.
Rondeau said there were efforts as
far back as a year ago to heal rifts within
caucus, but those efforts failed.
" During
caucus meetings,
we
had tried to
bring people
together and
there ( were)
efforts to
vent things,
but again it
wasn't successful,"
he
said. " When
you have
fundamental
differences
and animosity,
it's hard to bring people together."
Rondeau said Thursday he is skeptical
New Democrats loyal to either
Selinger or Oswald can rally behind the
other if one of them wins the leadership
vote March 8. That's why he has
endorsed Ashton as a leader who can
unite the party.
" Steve has been honourable through
this process," he said of the former infrastructure
and transportation minister,
who resigned his cabinet post in late December
to contest the leadership.
Selinger opened up the leadership in
November following the resignations
from cabinet of five ministers, including
Oswald. The so- called Gang of
Five had called on the premier to step
down as leader to give the NDP a better
chance of winning the next election.
Rondeau said in a statement Thursday
the party needs more than a mediator
to set it on the right path.
" We need a leader who can unify the
party and bring us back together at the
end of this current leadership process.
We need a leader who is fundamentally
committed to the principles of our party
and has stood strong even in our darkest
times," Rondeau said of Ashton.
A spokeswoman for Selinger's campaign
didn't immediately return a
request for comment Thursday afternoon.
A spokesman for Oswald said the Seine
River MLA was in rural Manitoba and
unavailable for an interview. In an email,
he described Mackintosh's mediation
role as " more informal than formal."
" While there may be a few people
out there pessimistic about party unity,
which is to be expected in any internal
leadership race, they are few and far
between and greatly outnumbered by
all the people we have heard from who
are very optimistic about our party's
future and our ability to emerge united,
renewed and in a competitive position
heading into the next election," the Oswald
official said.
