P ROGRESSIVE Conservative Leader
Brian Pallister says he rejects the
assertion by Toronto- based Maclean’s
magazine Winnipeg is the most
racist of Canadian cities.
“ I would object to that observation...
it’s not my experience,” Pallister said
Friday.
Manitoba has hosted people from
around the world throughout its history,
the Tory leader said. “ We here in Winnipeg
and Manitoba understand what it’s
like to extend our arms to people from
all ethnic backgrounds and racial backgrounds
as well.”
Pallister also took issue with the claim
on the magazine’s cover that “ Canada
has a bigger race problem than America”
and that it’s “ ugliest” in Winnipeg.
“ I’m strongly objecting to the thesis
that our racial problems exceed those of
the United States of America... ” he said.
“ In fact, I would say that we have a
greater understanding of tolerance
than any homogenous community outside
of this area, where there is not a
multi- ethnic, multiracial presence,” he
added.
“ It’s easy to say you’re tolerant in the
absence of the presence of others from
different races, creeds and colours. But
the reality is… our province attracts
people with hope. We have to make sure
that hope can happen here. And I think
we are up for the challenge. More than
that, I know we are.”
On Winnipeg’s treatment of indigenous
people, Pallister said the key is for
everyone to work together to build an environment
where everyone can achieve
their dreams.
“ That requires all of us to understand
that, yes, there is a problem, but also
there is also a solution,” the Tory leader
said.
He said he would be proposing some
solutions closer to the next provincial
election set for April 2016.
MACLEAN’S magazine calling Winnipeg
the most racist city in Canada might
actually turn out to be a positive for the
Manitoba capital.
At a minimum, it has become the hottest
water- cooler topic of the week, said
Ovide Mercredi, former national chief
of the Assembly of First Nations.
“ What we’re most interested in is getting
people talking about the issues,
which range from resource development
to poverty. We want to try to find solutions
to the problems that we all share
and engage ordinary people in the dialogue,”
he said.
“ We want to change the conversation
from finger- pointing and blaming to
what we can do together.”
Mercredi was joined in a panel discussion
Friday afternoon at the Winnipeg
Free Press News Café by former prime
minister Joe Clark and Stephen Kakfwi,
former premier of the Northwest Territories
and former president of the Dene
Nation.
The trio is part of a group called Canadians
For a New Partnership.
Clark said there is a new awareness
not just in Winnipeg but across Canada
about the racial problems facing the
country.
“ What Winnipeg did ( Thursday) in response
to the article was take bad news
in the accusations and turn it into very
good news. We’re trying to identify ways
we can move forward together on issues
that have been troubling for a long time,”
he said.
Kakfwi praised Mayor Brian Bowman
for stepping up immediately after the
Maclean’s story broke and, rather than
getting defensive, calling it an opportunity
instead of a threat.
“ It’s an incredible statement of
strength and hope that in such a short
time he was surrounded by Ovide ( and
others). We want to do something and
we’re going to do it together,” he said.
Mercredi agreed.
“ The mayor made a call and dozens
of people showed up Friday in support.
Imagine if he had a week. We think
Canadians are ready for change,” he
said.
