They are, of course, opinionated, because they are paid to provide their opinions. They are headstrong, because they need to be to write columns that matter and columns that connect with readers. And as any editor will tell you, they are frequently difficult to deal with because they are so damned opinionated and headstrong. But above all, columnists are important to newspapers because they bring personality to our pages. They give voice to views that need to be heard. They know how to weave words to engage, to enrage, to entertain. With all this in mind, we debut today a new fulltime columnist whose marching orders are to use her gifts of language, style, curiosity, intelligence - and, above all, opinion - to bring a new generational perspective to the Free Press . And here's why I am placing all that pressure on Jen Zoratti. A survey a year ago in J- Source , a publication of the Canadian Journalism Project, found the country's newspaper columnists were mostly male and mostly middle- aged. According to that numbercrunching of news and general- interest columnists at Canada's 76 English- language dailies, the median age was 58.5 - and only 27 per cent were female. A similar study in the United States of 143 columnists representing big papers such as the New York Times and Washington Post as well as the largest press syndicates found a similar breakdown: The median age hovered around 60 and there were only 38 women in the mix. " Why are newspaper opinion columnists so consistently baffled by the politics, technologies, and social mores of the 21st century?" is how Gawker began the story about its findings on the lack of diversity among U. S. columnists. " We've crunched some data, and we think we've figured out the answer: They're old as hell." Jen is anything but old as hell. In fact, a birthdate that makes her slightly younger than Katy Perry had Jen thinking the roar of a columnist gig was well beyond her reach and her experience. " I never fancied myself a capital- C Columnist - mostly due to the fact that it seemed like a job for ' grown- ups' ( read: older gentleman) and, for a long time, I suffered from crippling imposter syndrome,'' Jen wrote in her application for this columnist posting. " I mean, who the hell am I? But when I began blogging in 2013 - and, eventually, writing columns for the paper - I realized that I did indeed have a voice and opinions ( outside of whether or not the new Taylor Swift album is lifechanging or not) that were worth committing to ink, virtual and real." Those of you who have been reading Jen's work on our pages will know she has a voice and opinion worth committing to ink, both virtual and real. In addition to serving as our music critic, she's tackled big- picture stories on everything from the culture of rape to the rise of pet owners becoming pet parents. She's demonstrated the ability to take tough stands on our editorial pages and provided a lighter touch when fronting videos for our website. In other words, Jen has the write stuff to be what a columnist needs to be today in terms of rewarding those who read her in print and online or follow her on social media. I'll leave it up to Jen to formally introduce herself to you in her first column on B1. - Paul Samyn is the Free Press editor paul. samyn@ freepress. mb. ca @ paulsamyn PAUL SAMYN New voice for evolving community Zoratti may combat gap between columnists, readers RUTH BONNEVILLE / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS Jen Zoratti: younger perspective See Doug Speirs A17 A_ 02_ Jan- 24- 15_ FP_ 01. indd A2 1/ 23/ 15 10: 43: 03 PM ;
