O TTAWA - Churchill MP Niki Ashton
was promoted to aboriginal
affairs critic in the federal NDP
shadow cabinet Friday.
NDP Leader Tom Mulcair is arranging
his team ahead of the next federal election,
which is currently scheduled for
October. In the shuffle, Mulcair moved
aside MPs who aren't running again.
Ashton, 32, replaces B. C. MP Jean
Crowder, who announced last year she
won't be seeking re- election.
" I'm pretty excited and very honoured,"
said Ashton. " This has always
been an area that is close to my heart."
Ashton, first elected in 2008, was the
critic for the status of women, but has
taken on a large role on the aboriginal
file as well. Her riding has the largest
population of First Nations of any in
the country, and the second- largest aboriginal
population overall, including
First Nations, Inuit and Mtis. Ashton
has been outspoken about the need for a
national inquiry into cases of murdered
and missing aboriginal women.
The status of women critic role will
now be filled by Mylne Freeman, a
Montreal- area MP who was part of the
2011 McGill student class who scored
surprise victories in the 2011 election.
Longtime Vancouver MP Libby
Davies, who has been in the House of
Commons since 1997, is being replaced
as the health critic by fellow B. C. MP
Murray Rankin, and Yvon Godin, who
has represented a New Brunswick riding
since 1997, is being replaced as
critic for official languages by northern
Ontario MP Claude Gravelle.
Davies will stay on as one of three
NDP deputy leaders, along with Halifax
MP Megan Leslie and Hamilton MP
David Christopherson.
Pat Martin, Manitoba's other NDP MP,
will stay on as the critic for public works.
In the lead- up to the election, Ashton said
she'll focus on speaking out for aboriginal
Canadians who have " paid a high price
from the Harper government."
She said the Conservatives haven't
properly addressed poverty on reserves,
lack of housing, low education rates and
high numbers of kids in child welfare.
