It was a sound unlike anything else out there. Armed with a successful debut ( by 2006, the record had gone gold in Canada) and an incendiary live show, Jesse F. Keeler and Sebastien Grainger were poised to break out big. Instead, they broke up. After the 2006 split, Keeler went on to find success with MSTRKRFT, while Grainger embarked on a solo career. Still, no one forgot about DFA 1979 and, when the duo announced they were reuniting for a string of shows in 2011, die- hard fans were champing at the bit for a chance to see them perform. A riot even erupted at the band's now- infamous comeback gig at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas. Happily for fans, those reunion shows were enough to convince DFA 1979 to return to making music. In 2014, the duo followed up that lightning bolt of a first record with The Physical World , which Keeler and Grainger are taking on a cross- country tour that stops at the Garrick Centre on Tuesday night. That show is sold out, but Cinematheque is screening Life After Death From Above 1979, Eva Michon's documentary about the rise, fall and return of the band, on Wednesday night at 9 p. m. Michon and Grainger will be on hand to introduce the film - which features interviews with the Strokes, Metric and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs - and answer questions. General admission is $ 9. LONDON - Benedict Cumberbatch says he was an " idiot" to refer to nonwhite actors as " coloured." The Academy Award- nominated actor used the word on PBS talk show Tavis Smiley last week while discussing diversity in the entertainment industry. He said that " as far as coloured actors go," there were more opportunities in the U. S. than Britain, " and that's something that needs to change." British anti- racism charity Show Racism the Red Card said it welcomed Cumberbatch's comments on diversity but felt the term he used was " outdated." In a statement Monday, Cumberbatch apologized for his " thoughtless use of inappropriate language." He said: " I'm devastated to have caused offence by using this outmoded terminology. I offer my sincere apologies. I make no excuse for my being an idiot and know the damage is done." - The Associated Press WASHINGTON - The chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee says critics of U. S. foreign policy are disparaging the movie, American Sniper and denigrating the memory of Chris Kyle, the U. S. serviceman depicted in the film. In a statement Monday, Sen. John McCain congratulated director Clint Eastwood and the cast and crew of the movie for honouring the life of Kyle, whom he calls an American hero. The Arizona Republican says the film offers a compassionate portrayal of service members, their wartime experiences, the burdens they often bear upon returning home and untold sacrifices of their families. To critics like Michael Moore, a documentary maker, the film glorifies violence. Moore, a staunch opponent of the U. S. invasion of Iraq in 2003, tweeted about the movie: " Snipers aren't heroes, and invaders are worse." - The Associated Press TORONTO - Celebrity chef Lynn Crawford and comic Noah Cappe are teaming up on a venture to define, document and celebrate Canadian cuisine. Production started Monday on the Great Canadian Cookbook, a multi- pronged project of Food Network Canada. Great Canadian Cookbook includes the launch of a website later this year, followed by a four- part TV series. Crawford and Cappe will examine Canada's cultural food mosaic through meeting and eating with Canadian food- lovers and makers across the country. Part of that will include kitchen conversations and a look at homegrown ingredients and generations of beloved family recipes. The online companion site is slated to include recipes, celebrity videos and how- to's. - The Canadian Press N EW YORK - Melissa Rivers filed a malpractice lawsuit Monday against doctors and the clinic where her mother, Joan Rivers, had a routine medical procedure, stopped breathing and later died. Rivers said in a statement that filing the suit was one of the most difficult decisions she had to make. " What ultimately guided me was my unwavering belief that no family should ever have to go through what my mother, Cooper and I have been through," she said, referring to her son. " The level of medical mismanagement, incompetency, disrespect and outrageous behaviour is shocking and frankly, almost incomprehensible." Joan Rivers, a comedian who crashed the male- dominated realm of late- night talk shows, died Sept. 4 at age 81. The city's medical examiner found that she died of brain damage due to lack of oxygen after she stopped breathing during an endoscopy at Yorkville Endoscopy days earlier. Her death was classified as a therapeutic complication. A message seeking comment that was left with the clinic's manager was not immediately returned. The lawsuit said doctors mishandled the endoscopy and performed another medical procedure called a laryngoscopy on her vocal cords without consent. The suit said the doctor left the operating room to avoid being caught. " To put it mildly, we are not just disappointed by the acts and omissions leading to the death of Joan Rivers, but we are outraged by the lack of care and concern for Ms. Rivers on the part of her treating physicians and the endoscopy centre where the treatment was rendered," said her attorneys, Jeffrey Bloom and Ben Rubinowitz. A federal investigation, ordered by the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, found the Yorkville Endoscopy clinic made several errors, including failing to keep proper medication records and snapping cellphone photos of Rivers while she was unconscious. It also found the Manhattan clinic failed to get informed consent for every procedure performed and failed to record Rivers' weight before the administration of sedation medication. The clinic submitted a lengthy plan for fixes, but the changes weren't good enough and the federal agency said it would revoke accreditation unless it was in better compliance by March 2. - The Associated Press Death From Above doc screens at Cinematheque Actor apologizes for using offensive language John McCain gives thumbs- up to Sniper New TV show will explore Canadian cuisine Joan Rivers' daughter files malpractice suit Chef Lynn Crawford LIONEL CIRONNEAU/ THE ASSOCIATED PRESS FILES Joan Rivers died Sept, 4, 2014, from complications resulting from endoscopic surgery.
