DEAR READERS: Sympathetic Winnipeg parents rallied quickly to help Mad Home Dad, the stay- athome father who's feeling extremely frustrated. He's the guy whose wife declared herself " not as domestic as she thought" after having two babies in two years, and went to work full- time before Christmas. Here are some of the best letters, full of resources and support: Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I would like to pass on our services to Mad Home Dad. We are the Winnipeg Dads Group and we aim to provide a social network and a resource base for the dads of Winnipeg. We have weekly playgroup meet- ups, dads- night- out events, as well as events for the whole family. All of the ways to connect with us are listed on our website, winnipegdads. com. First, the frustrated dad should visit schools in his area and ask if there are playgroups available, and get the name of the facilitator. In my area of Seven Oaks there are multiple groups with morning, afternoon and evening events almost every day of the week ( he should send his wife in the evening and get a break). Second, there are also lots of drop- in programs at local libraries, usually advertised at the door. Third, visit your local WRHA Community Health Centre, which also offers many drop- in programs. There are also community centres, parks, wading pools and even play areas at some shopping centres. For short breaks, you can put them in daycare at the YMCA for an hour while you work out or swim, and after, the kids can play on the play structure or the gym. It can be work taking kids out in winter and packing everything, but worth the effort in the end. You may even find they will sleep better after filling your days up. - Wanting To Help, Seven Oaks Dear Miss Lonelyhearts : While Mad Home Dad's introduction into being a stay- at- home dad may not have been the best, it's up to him what he makes of it. For me, it was a choice my wife and I made together, and it was my main job for over seven years. When I started I was clearly an exception and not always welcome at parent- and- tot times, but over time I met more and more men who had, for a variety of reasons, made the same choice I had. You can see the difference in the children whose parent( s) have chosen to be active parts of their kids' lives. There is a lot to be said for being a dad, which is often overlooked and even occasionally minimized. They are as important to the healthy development of a child as a mom. My wife is an amazing mom, and I could never take her place, so I didn't try, but I could, and did, do my best to be dad. My boys and their friends certainly appreciated it. It wasn't always easy, and it was sometimes lonely, but it was the best and most important thing I've ever done. - Glad Home Dad, Winnipeg Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: Years ago, I was a stay- at- home dad for three kids under five, feeling lonely and sorry for myself. My wife was a professional with very big earning potential. It made sense for me to stay at home. After a difficult first year, my mom ( who moved to the West Coast) suggested I canvass Winnipeg aunts, grandmas and neighbours. I found people who really wanted to help me out and we made a schedule of activities. I can't tell you how much it meant to all of us to get so close to these little kids, and to each other, and to give them all the love and attention they needed.
