INSIDE
LOTTERIES
E VERY once in a while, in a
sincere and humanitarian effort
to bridge the gap between the
genders, I like to use this column to
highlight scientifically significant
differences between men and women.
One of the major differences surfaced
the other
night as my wife
and I sat on separate
couches
in our den and
watched a CBS
special on the
greatest Super
Bowl commercials
of all time.
Super Bowl
commercials are
traditionally a
unifying force,
because even
men obsessed
with football
love them since
they tend to
focus on sportsrelated
issues, such as beer, snack
foods made primarily from grease,
and supermodels.
But, with the 49th Super Bowl bearing
down on us, this special revealed
there is a growing divide in the way
men and women recall major historical
events that helped to shape the
modern world as we know it.
It featured a behind- the- scenes
glimpse of the making of a new Super
Bowl ad for a web- development firm
called Wix, in which former Pittsburgh
Steelers superstar Franco Harris
portrays the operator of a fictional
wedding- planning company known as
( insert dramatic pause here) " Immaculate
Receptions."
While male readers are now laughing
and nodding their heads at the
cleverness of this TV ad, female
readers are looking around blankly
and forming the following thought:
" Huh?"
Which is to say I was deeply
amused by the bit featuring Harris,
but when I glanced behind me, my
wife's face was sporting the sort of
bland expression you'd expect from
someone examining X- rays of their
teeth.
" I'm guessing that reference to
Immaculate Receptions went right
over your head?" I grunted in her
direction.
" Not at all," she sniffed in a deeply
offended tone. " I've heard about the
Immaculate Conception before."
" No," I snorted, " I'm talking about
one of the greatest plays in the history
of football. I'm talking about a
miracle."
My wife frowned. " The Immaculate
Conception?" she replied. " I'm pretty
sure I'm talking about a miracle, too."
I bravely muted the sound on the
TV. " The ad was a joke about the
Immaculate Reception ," I explained.
" It was the miraculous catch Franco
Harris made in the dying seconds of
a 1972 playoff game to beat the Oakland
Raiders."
My wife was unimpressed. " That's
nice," she sighed.
I pressed on. " They have statues of
Franco Harris all over the place in
Pittsburgh immortalizing that catch,"
I said, warming to this vital historical
topic.
My wife shrugged. " Uh huh."
" It was the dying seconds of the
game," I droned on, as my fevered
male brain replayed the thrilling
moment. " The Steelers were losing
and quarterback Terry Bradshaw
was flushed from the pocket and
he desperately lobbed a long bomb
downfield."
My wife was staring into the middle
distance, so I talked louder. " But the
Raiders' safety, Jack Tatum, collided
with the receiver just as the
football arrived, and the ball went
sailing backwards, end over end, and
began falling to the ground. With five
seconds left in the game, just as the
ball was about to plop dead onto the
field, Pittsburgh running back Franco
Harris, who had been quietly trailing
behind the play, scooped it off his
( bad word) shoe tops and rumbled all
the way into the end zone.
" Everybody went nuts! It was the
Steelers' first playoff victory ever.
NFL Films picked the Immaculate
Reception as the greatest play of all
time. And the guy announcing the
game on TV called it ' the Miracle of
Miracles.' "
I waited patiently for my wife to
comment on this impromptu history
lesson, but she just sat there looking
bemused.
" That's why it's such a cool ad," I
told her. " A wedding planner called
Immaculate Receptions? Get it?"
Shrugging, my wife reached for
the TV remote and turned the sound
back on.
" Yeah, I get it," she said, coldly,
" but I don't really care about all that
football stuff. I like the other Super
Bowl ads."
I took the bait. " What other ads?" I
demanded.
There was an air of superiority to
her smile. " You know, the beer ads
with the cute horsies and puppies,"
she said. " That's what people watch
the game for."
Which is when, with all the dignity
I could muster, I climbed off
the couch, scowled at my wife, and
marched out of the den, nose in the
air, to get myself a cold beer.
Because even if you're trying to
bridge the gender gap, sometimes you
have to draw a line in the sand.
