Ensaf Haidar, now a refugee living in Quebec, joined an all- party coalition of MPs on Parliament Hill Thursday urging Prime Minister Stephen Harper to intervene personally with the Saudis. They want the prime minister to push for the release of Badawi, who is set to receive 50 more lashes today. It is part of Badawi's ongoing punishment of 1,000 lashes, a 10- year prison sentence and heavy fines for criticizing Saudi clerics on a blog he founded. The 32- year- old father of three was lashed 50 times on Jan. 9, but his second scheduled beating was postponed last week for medical reasons. " Raif's health condition is getting worse and worse," Haidar said through a translator during a press conference on Parliament Hill. She said that was the conclusion of several doctors who examined her husband in the last week. " I am very concerned about him. It is impossible for a human being to be able to withstand 50 lashes weekly." Liberal MP Irwin Cotler, a longtime human rights advocate, said Saudi Arabia must live up to its international obligations as signatory to the United Nations convention banning torture. He said Saudi leaders have stated their support for the free speech rights of the Paris newspaper, Charlie Hebdo , which was attacked by terrorists angry at its depictions of the Prophet Muhammad. " The same principles, the same obligations apply with regard to Raif Badawi," said Cotler. Amnesty International says it has signatures of 150,000 Canadians on a petition asking for Badawi's release. " The human rights concerns here are so compelling," said Alex Neve, Amnesty's Canadian secretary general. " It also reflects the fact that there's a strong Canadian connection by virtue of the fact Raif Badawi's family lives here in Canada." Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird, Development Minister Christian Paradis and Andrew Bennett, Canada's ambassador for religious freedom, have all issued statements condemning Badawi's sentence. Baird brought the matter up last week in Davos, Switzerland with Prince Turki Al Faisal, a member of the ruling House of Saud. The prince is scheduled to visit Ottawa in mid- February. - The Canadian Press Wife of Saudi blogger asks PM to step in By Mike Blanchfield Canadian dies in Costa Rica MONTREAL - A Montreal man says his mother drowned in Costa Rica while trying to save her two- year- old grandniece from getting caught up in the waves. Alexandre Charron says his mother, Andree Hamel, 70, had travelled to the Central American country to help out her niece, who was alone with two young children. Charron says his cousin in Costa Rica told relatives in Canada the fatal accident happened in the blink of an eye while the three were at the beach on Monday. He was told the toddler, Jasmine Rodriguez Olshansky, wandered over to the water's edge and his mother ran to get her out. He said the undertow was too strong and both were pulled under. The toddler also died. Charron says he is working to get his mother's body back to Canada so his family can start to properly mourn her death. " It happened so suddenly," he told The Canadian Press in a French- language phone interview on Thursday. " My mother was there to get some rest and to lend a hand." King of Kitsch dies NEW YORK - Rod McKuen, the husky- voiced " King of Kitsch" whose music, verse and spoken- word recordings in the 1960s and ' 70s won him an Oscar nomination and made him one of the bestselling poets in history, has died. He was 81. McKuen died Thursday morning at a rehabilitation centre in Beverly Hills, Calif., where he had been treated for pneumonia and had been ill for several weeks and was unable to digest food, said his half- brother, Edward McKuen Habib. Until his sabbatical in 1981, McKuen was an astonishingly successful and prolific force in popular culture, turning out hundreds of songs and poems and records, including the Academy Award- nominated song Jean for the 1969 film The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie . Sentimental, earnest and unashamed, he conjured a New Age spirit world that captivated those who didn't ordinarily like " poetry" and those who craved relief from the war, assassinations and riots of the time. " I think it's a reaction people are having against so much insanity in the world," he once said. " I mean, people are really all we've got. You know it sounds kind of corny, and I suppose it's a clich, but it's really true; that's just the way it is." His best- known songs, some written with the Belgian composer Jacques Brel, include Birthday Boy , A Man Alone , If You Go Away and Seasons In the Sun , a chart- topper in 1974 for Terry Jacks. Frank Sinatra, Madonna, Dolly Parton and Chet Baker were among the many artists who recorded his material, although McKuen often handled the job himself, in a hushed, throaty style he had honed after an early life as a rock singer cracked his natural tenor. Tragedy on film lot TAIPEI, Taiwan - A worker was killed in an accident Thursday at a Taiwanese film lot during preparations for the shooting of a new Martin Scorsese movie, media reports said. Taiwan's Central News Agency said Chen Yu- lung was killed and two other men were injured when scaffolding around a building suddenly collapsed. All three were Taiwanese contractors hired by the film's producers. The lot belongs to the Chinese Culture and Movie Center, which issued a statement saying the contracting film crew bore responsibility for health and safety in the accident. The news agency said shooting had not yet begun on the movie, a historical drama titled Silence about two Jesuit priests in 17th- century Japan, based on a 1966 novel by Japanese author Shusaku Endo. The cast includes Liam Neeson and Andrew Garfield of The Amazing Spider- Man . Scorsese is in Taiwan to shoot the film, but it wasn't known if he was on the lot. Leslee Dart, the spokeswoman for the film, said an existing structure on the backlot of the studios had been deemed unsafe, and a third- party contractor was hired to reinforce it. " Sadly, during this process, the ceiling collapsed, resulting in the death of one of the contractor's employees and injuries to two others," she said. - from the news services In Brief A_ 16_ Jan- 30- 15_ FP_ 01. indd A12 1/ 29/ 15 10: 03: 33 PM ;
