On Dec. 22, Jim Belbas was out burning some brush near his farm south of Holmfield when he heard a gun go off. Holmfield is about 20 kilometres southeast of Killarney. " I heard this loud bang and it was awful close so I yelled out ' Don't shoot, I'm out here,' " Belbas said. The next thing he saw was a dark truck speeding away on a gravel road. Belbas didn't think much of the incident until the following day when he left the house and Makenna, his 2 � - yearold Great Pyrenees, didn't meet him at the door. " She always greets me in the morning, and it had snowed a bit and there were no tracks, so I knew she wasn't around," Belbas said. He found the 36- kiologram sheepdog dead, a bullet fired through her chest. He finds it hard to believe anyone would mistake the dog for a coyote. " It is terrible," Belbas said. " I like to think it's an honest mistake, but it's hard to believe anyone would shoot something that is as white as she was." Makenna shepherded the couple's sheep and ensured none of the lambs was killed by coyotes. " She was a beautiful dog and it is really sad," Brenda said. " It's hard to get a good dog." Prior to getting Makenna, the farming couple, who own about 100 sheep, lost a dozen lambs to coyotes. " It's amazing what a dog can do, and we never lost a lamb since we got Makenna," Brenda said. "( Dogs) have a big responsibility on the farm." Brenda wants whoever shot the dog to know what Makenna meant to them. She said Jim spent a lot of time with her, and even trained her to obey certain phrases in Ukrainian. " You don't know what people are thinking. Maybe they thought it would be fun to shoot a dog?"
