Both lived in the constant glare of attention, both struggled with drugs; both married men criticized by family and friends as wrong for them. As the pop star's 21- year- old daughter lay in a coma Monday at a Georgia hospital, police issued their first incident report, saying only that they were called to her home in suburban Atlanta in response to " a drowning" and secured the scene for investigators. " Bobbi Kristina is fighting for her life and is surrounded by immediate family," the Houston family said in a statement. " We are asking you to honour our request for privacy during this difficult time." Bobbi Kristina apparently didn't feel so surrounded on Jan. 29, two days before she was found in the tub, when she tweeted " On my own." On Feb. 11, 2012, just before the Grammys, Houston's assistant found the singer's lifeless in her tub at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Bobbi Kristina, then 18, was outside the room, so distraught that she was hospitalized in hysterics. In the years after her mother's death, she's made headlines for drug use, weight loss and family disputes. - The Associated Press LOS ANGELES - Former rap mogul Marion ( Suge) Knight is now jailed in Los Angeles on a no- bail hold following his arrest on suspicion of murder in the death of a man in Compton. Knight was originally held in lieu of $ 2 million bail after his arrest Friday. Los Angeles County Sheriff's department spokeswoman Nicole Nishida says detectives petitioned a bail commissioner on Monday to change his status to no bail due to Knight being a possible flight risk, a three- strikes candidate, possible witness intimidation issues and his criminal past. Authorities allege Knight killed one man and injured another with his pickup truck on Thursday. Attorney James Blatt says Knight accidentally ran over the men as he tried to escape a vicious attack. Knight is scheduled to appear at the Compton courthouse Tuesday. - The Associated Press Suge Knight a flight risk, $ 2M bail revoked the Scene A TRIP AROUND THE WORLD OF ENTERTAINMENT Whitney's daughter fighting for her life Late singer Whitney Houston, left, and daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown. But she did bring home a Golden Crock- Pot. Smyth, 49, unexpectedly found herself an entrant in a cooking competition on The Dr. Oz Show when she visited her friend Brent Kideckel in New York City last month. " We had been planning on going to the live taping," says the East Kildonan resident. " Brent texted me and said one of the themes of the show was healthy Crock- Pot recipes. I said: ' I have a recipe.' So I just sent it to him, and then he sent it to ' Ashley' on Dr. Oz. " Then Brent came back and said: ' You're going to be on the show.'" Taped on Tuesday, Jan. 13, the show turned out to be a showcase for Smyth's Vegan Chickpea Stew, which won the award for best recipe. Making the dish for the TV show turned out be a particular challenge, Smyth says. " Brent's a bachelor living in New York and he's always getting takeout meals," she says. " So we actually had to go out and buy a Crock- Pot, and buy all the ingredients. On Monday, we spent all day cooking and then we had to physically take the slow cooker and the food and be at the Dr. Oz studio at 8 o'clock in the morning. " I was like: ' I'm on vacation!'" she says with a laugh. " But it turned out to be worthwhile. It was surreal. It was crazy." In a way, the recipe is very much a product of her Winnipeg life, says Smyth, who has been a vegan for the past 2 years. " Because it's so cold, I want something that's bright and cheery and will heat me up and keep me full," she says. " And I'm lazy, so I typically make a full Crock- Pot on Sundays and I freeze portions for lunch every day at work. "( This recipe) is on my top rotation. I make it all the time." Smyth works at records management and archiving for the accounting firm Deloitte, and also blogs for the Saskatchewan- based animalrescue service The Pack Project. She says she's not giving up those jobs to get into cooking. " In my family, I was the only one who knew how to cook, so I cooked for a family of six every night for almost my entire life," she says. Smyth says she proudly displays her Golden Crock- Pot on the mantle in her dining room, but anyone who takes a close look at the gold- painted prize may discover it's not all it's crocked up to be. " The thing is, it's not even a Crock- Pot, it's a rice cooker," she says. " I think it was something they just needed to do it in a hurry. " Don't get me wrong, I really appreciate it," she says. " But it's not a Crock- Pot." randall. king@ freepress. mb. ca Turns out Winnipegger is the real wizard of Oz By Randall King CTV Robin Smyth's recipe wowed Dr. Mehmet Oz with its combination of nutrition and flavour.
