The public auto insurer posted a net income of $ 23 million in the first quarter of this year - up from $ 14.2 million during the same period last year. It said claims costs fell $ 49.6 million for the three months ending May 31. Most of that came from lower payouts for personal injuries - $ 42.5 million. The corporation said a growth in the number and value of registered vehicles helped boost revenues. Another factor was more drivers were paying higher premiums as a result of driving infractions. MPI earned a $ 57.5- million profit last year after sustaining a $ 44.8- million loss the year before. In December, the Public Utilities Board granted MPI a 3.4 per cent average rate increase for 2015, after the Crown corporation experienced a bad winter for claims the previous year and expressed concern about the state of its reserve fund. In June, MPI said it would not ask the Public Utilities Board for an overall rate increase for next year. It said as many as 550,000 vehicles in Manitoba could have lower insurance rates next year. Nevertheless, the PUB will commence hearings on MPI rates Oct. 5. Zebra mussel inspections THE province is setting up boat inspection stations with decontamination units at two parks this weekend to target zebra mussels, an aquatic invasive species. Manitoba Conservation and Water Stewardship will conduct the inspections at St. Vital Park in Winnipeg and Selkirk Park in Selkirk until Monday. Zebra mussels multiply rapidly and can threaten fish stocks, clog water intakes and increase toxic algal blooms if left unchecked. It is illegal to possess or transport the creatures in Manitoba. They are already present in the south basin of Lake Winnipeg and the Manitoba portion of the Red River. The province advises boaters to: . Clean and remove any visible aquatic plants, aquatic invasive species or mud from the watercraft, trailer and all water- related equipment. . Drain all water from motors, bilges, bait buckets and any compartments. . Dry all water- related equipment and any hard- to- drain compartments that have touched the water with a dry towel or sponge before it is used in any other body of water. . Dispose of unused bait and worms in the trash. To report a zebra mussel or any other invasive species from a location, take pictures and visit the website at www. manitoba. ca/ stopais or call 1- 87- STOP- AIS- 0 ( 1- 877- 867- 2470). Farmer gives away hay JURGEN Kohler believes it's time to give away hay when the sun shines. The Brunkild- area grain farmer is offering to donate 75 round bales ( approximately 500 kilograms apiece) to producers in drought- stricken producers out west. " Alberta or Saskatchewan, wherever it's the driest or people are really desperate," Kohler said. " I want to donate the bales to them. It appears we have a lot of feed in our province. " I want to set the example and do the Canadian thing," he added. " The Canadian thing is to help out in parts of the country where need is the most." Severe drought has left Saskatchewan and Alberta producers with little or no pasture, spiking the cost of round bales upwards of $ 250. That price is usually closer to $ 50. Kohler understands his supply is limited. " It's not going to fill the entire need, but it's a step in the right direction," he noted. " Hopefully, people will follow suit." Kohler has received several responses to his open offer, including a producer north of Saskatoon. " She's extremely desperate," he said. " I'm basically holding the bales for her." The main obstacle is cost of transportation, however. The bales are free, but gas and transport trucks are not, Kohler said. For more information, contact jurgen. kohler84@ gmail. com. New provincial jobs fund ECONOMY Minister Kevin Chief announced Friday the creation of a $ 1.5- million fund under the recently released First Jobs Strategy. " Our economy is growing, and Manitoba businesses want to make sure our young people have the chance to be a part of it," Chief said. " Working together, we will make sure they have the exposure to the opportunities waiting for them, connections with future employers and the support they need as they start their careers." The fund and strategy will include: . A dedicated First Jobs Strategy intake coordinator who will be the first contact for recent graduates and connect them to job resources and online tools. . Working with post- secondary partners to create more co- op programs so students have access to on- the- job training as part of their university experience. . Providing more opportunities for recent graduates to find entry- level positions in the public service. - staff In Brief S U P P O R T E D B Y C A N C E R C A R E M A N I T O B A F O U N D AT I O N A_ 19_ Jul- 18- 15_ FP_ 01. indd A19 7/ 17/ 15 5: 19: 49 PM ;
