COM MONDAY, JULY 20, 2015 A 3 A NEW round has started in the fight against zebra mussels in Manitoba and everyone who uses the province's waterways needs to step into the ring. The province is running its summer zebra mussel detection and boat decontamination program near launches at various rivers and lakes. On Sunday, provincial watercraft inspectors were operating decontamination stations at the St. Vital Park boat launch and Selkirk Park. Zebra mussels are an invasive species the province unsuccessfully attempted to stop last summer. They are more than just a nuisance. They attach themselves to hard surfaces such as docks, boats, propellers, water- intake pipes and buoys, raising serious concerns that zebra mussels interfere with the natural food chain and the health of the fishery. " Hopefully we can catch everyone that's planning to go to a non- infested water body and properly decontaminate the boat, to educate and to prevent any spread," said provincial inspector Troy Szaura. At the St. Vital launch, Szaura and Kaela Lowey decontaminated the watercraft and equipment of those boaters who indicated they intend to visit locations other than the Red River, which is already contaminated by zebra mussels. " I'd say 40 per cent of our job is actually dealing with decontamination of boats and the other 60 per cent is educating people and getting the word out there and making them more knowledgable on how to decontaminate their boats themselves," Szaura said. " A lot of our job is getting this truth out there that zebra mussels are actually bad and that even just one boat ( containing zebra mussels) can create an infestation." The decontamination program has been running since late May, and a station has been operating at St. Vital Park since June 26. " We try to get people as they are leaving, not arriving, because the Red River is already contaminated," Lowey said, adding most are co- operative when the inspectors ask them to pull into the decontamination station. Zebra mussels reproduce quickly - females can lay more than one million eggs in a spawning season - and spread rapidly. Larvae, called veligers, can't be seen by the human eye without a microscope and can survive in standing water for up to 30 days. Young zebra mussels float with the current and can attach in large numbers to hard surfaces such as rocks, boat docks and bridge pilings, and as adults can clog pipes such as those used for municipal or industrial water systems. They also feed on organisms that are primary food sources for newly hatched fish. Zebra mussels can also be transported to new areas in undrained water from boat bait buckets, float plane pontoons, watercraft motors or any onboard compartments. " We can't stop it ( the spread of zebra mussels) once it's here, but we can stop it from spreading to different lakes," Lowey said. Inspectors have shifted their focus to trying to save waters that haven't been infested. There's relatively few of these now. On a list carried by inspectors, Lac du Bonnet ( town), McArthur Falls, Otter Falls, Pinawa, Pointe du Bois, Silver Falls and St. Georges are locations where zebra mussels have not been detected. " It can be misleading because a big sign of zebra mussels is that they're cleaning out the waters. Once they're established, their aggressive filterfeeding clears out the water, but they're cleaning all the good algae and leaving all the green- blue algae," Szaura said. " They ( also) feed on plankton, which is a large food source for our native fish. That can lead to population declining and it can lead to eradicating the species from the food web." Inspectors have run decontamination stations at numerous other locations, such as the Emerson and Boissevain border crossings, as well as boat launches in locations such as Pine Falls, Grand Beach, Winnipeg Beach, Gimli and The Pas. Last year, Manitoba introduced proposed legislation with a number of measures that would be specifically aimed at preventing the spread of zebra mussels. Earlier this month, it was reported that a " significant" number of young zebra mussels has been discovered in the Red River south of Fargo, N. D. - a sign the aquatic pest is more established in the Red River Valley than previously thought. The North Dakota Game and Fish Department said testing done June 23- 24 showed numerous zebra mussel veligers were found at six sites along the river from Wahpeton to Pembina. In Manitoba, mature zebra mussels were found in the Red River on a dock near Selkirk and have been detected at several locations in the south basin of Lake Winnipeg during the past two years. Zebra mussels have also been found on a lake southwest of Detroit Lakes, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Lake Eunice has been designated as infested with zebra mussels. - with files from Bruce Owen ashley. prest@ freepress. mb. ca Zebra mussel campaign in full swing Education key to limiting damage by invasive species By Ashley Prest Zapping zebra mussels 1.
