The media company wrote on its Twitter account it submitted its " candidacy for the NHL expansion process in order to bring the Nordiques back to Quebec City." The NHL announced last month it was opening the formal expansion process. The application process began July 6, with the first stage lasting until Monday. Each expansion bid costs US$ 10 million. Deputy commissioner Bill Daly confirmed a portion of that is nonrefundable, reportedly $ 2 million. Quebec City has not had an NHL team since the Nordiques left for Denver and became the Colorado Avalanche in 1995. Quebecor owns the new 18,259- capacity Videotron Arena in Quebec City. It's among several groups that have expressed interest in an expansion franchise, along with Las Vegas, Seattle and others. Las Vegas is the top candidate for expansion with prospective owner Bill Foley, whose season- ticket drive received almost 14,000 deposits. An arena is under construction on the strip and is set to open next spring. The NHL has said the earliest any expansion would happen is the 2017- 18 season. There are 16 teams in the Eastern Conference and 14 in the West, which would seem to make Las Vegas and potentially Seattle or Portland, Ore., favourites for expansion. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman has said geography is an issue, but not the determining factor. The NHL has a relationship with Quebecor through its French- language television- rights deal with TVA Sports. Quebecor president and CEO Pierre Dion said last month at the NHL draft the group and city possessed " all the ingredients" for NHL expansion. According to reports out of Seattle, the leading candidate to own a hockey team, there were no plans to submit an expansion bid. The formal expansion process goes until Aug. 10. Oilers to honour Sather EDMONTON - The Edmonton Oilers will raise a banner at Rexall Place to honour former coach, general manager and executive Glen Sather. The ceremony will take place Dec. 11 before a game versus the New York Rangers. Sather, who coached the Oilers to four Stanley Cup championships, is currently the Rangers president. Sather will become the ninth Oiler to be honoured with a banner, joining Al Hamilton, Wayne Gretzky, Jari Kurri, Grant Fuhr, Paul Coffey, Mark Messier, Glenn Anderson and longtime radio broadcaster Rod Phillips. Sather was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1997. He won four Stanley Cups as the Oilers head coach ( 1984- 88) and a fifth in 1990 as the team's president and general manager. Sather played 10 NHL seasons with the Boston Bruins, Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Rangers, St. Louis Blues, Montreal Canadiens and Minnesota North Stars, accumulating 192 points ( 80 goals, 112 assists). He also appeared in 72 playoff games. Sather played one season with the Oilers in 1976- 77 when the team was part of the World Hockey Association. NFL, PA ordered to settle MINNEAPOLIS - The NFL and the NFL Players Association have been ordered into settlement negotiations on the case filed in federal court by the union over Adrian Peterson's suspension. U. S. Magistrate Judge Janie Mayeron issued her order Monday. She set a settlement conference for Aug. 13, a half- hour following a previously scheduled hearing on the case in front of U. S. District Judge David Doty. The NFLPA filed a petition last November, seeking a rejection of NFL arbitrator Harold Henderson's decision to deny Peterson's appeal of his suspension. Peterson was punished by the league for the child- abuse charge he faced in Texas regarding his young son. Doty sided with the union in February and the league appealed. Packers made big bucks MILWAUKEE - The Green Bay Packers enjoyed another year of record revenue, with the NFL's only publiclyowned team bolstered in part by the windfall from the league's broadcasting contracts. The Packers said Monday revenue from the 2015 fiscal year topped $ 375 million, up 16 per cent from the previous year. Revenue from national sources increased by nearly 21 per cent to $ 226 million. Team President Mark Murphy said most of the national revenue increase came from the share of profits from broadcasting contracts that kicked in this year. Expenses grew by nearly 13 per cent to $ 336 million. The Packers listed a net income for the year of $ 29 million after accounting for costs related to redevelopment and stadium renovation projects. Predators lock up Smith NASHVILLE - The Nashville Predators have avoided arbitration with Craig Smith by signing the forward to a $ 21.25- million, five- year contract. General manager David Poile announced the deal with the restricted free agent on Monday. Poile called Smith an integral part of the Predators' young core, and the general manager says they are pleased they were able to come to a long- term agreement. Smith, 25, has scored at least 20 goals in two straight seasons. He had five points in six games in Nashville's first- round playoff loss to Chicago. Smith has 144 points in 277 career games with Nashville. He has played for the United States in four world championships since 2011. Pele released from hospital SAO PAULO - Pele has been released from a Brazilian hospital after successfully undergoing back surgery. Doctors say the 74- year- old soccer great left the Albert Einstein hospital on Monday, less than a week after undergoing a procedure for nerve root decompression. The surgery had been scheduled to fix discomfort in Pele's back and hip. Pele's manager, Paul Kemsley, said it was the first of two corrective procedures Pele will undergo in Brazil over the next few months to ensure the former player is " strong and healthy for the Rio Olympics and all of its related travel." Pele underwent prostate surgery in May, and in December he was hospitalized for two weeks because of a urinary tract infection that stemmed from surgery to remove kidney stones. - from the wire services SPORTS In Brief Quebecor submits bid for NHL expansion Glen Sather MEDAL STANDINGS Through Monday G S B Tot United States 65 55 49 169 Canada 55 51 42 148 Brazil 30 29 43 102 Colombia 24 8 24 56 Cuba 23 18 28 69 Mexico 14 21 28 63 Argentina 10 20 21 51 Guatemala 6 0 2 8 Ecuador 4 8 11 23 Chile 4 4 9 17 Venezuela 3 14 9 26 Peru 2 3 5 10 Dominican Rep. 1 3 6 10 Puerto Rico 1 0 8 9 Bahamas 1 0 1 2 Trinidad & Tobago 0 1 1 2 Note: Medals ranked by total golds SOCCER MEN PoolA G W D L F A P x- Brazil 3 2 1 0 11 4 7 x- Panama 3 1 2 0 5 4 5 Peru 3 1 0 2 3 6 3 Canada 3 0 1 2 1 6 1 PoolB G W D L F A P Paraguay 2 1 1 0 6 2 4 Mexico 2 1 1 0 2 1 4 Uruguay 2 1 0 1 4 1 3 Trin. & Tobago 2 0 0 2 1 9 0 WOMEN PoolA G W D L F A P x- Colombia 3 2 1 0 4 1 7 x- Mexico 3 2 0 1 6 3 6 Trin. & Tobago 3 0 2 1 4 6 2 Argentina 3 0 1 2 3 7 1 PoolB G W D L F A P x- Brazil 3 3 0 0 12 1 9 x- Canada 3 1 0 2 5 6 3 Costa Rica 3 1 0 2 2 5 3 Ecuador 3 1 0 2 5 12 3 x- advance to semifinals Monday Men: Peru 2 Canada 0 Brazil 3 Panama 3 Sunday Women: Brazil 2 Canada 0 Ecuador 2 Costa Rica 0 Tuesday Men: Trin. & Tobago vs. Mexico, 4: 35 p. m.
