TORONTO - An Ontario college says
it no longer employs a professor following
an investigation into a complaint
about homophobic comments allegedly
posted on social media.
A spokeswoman for St. Lawrence College
says an investigation was launched
after a student complained about comments
professor Rick Coupland allegedly
made on Facebook. Kelly Wiley
says the comments were a " breach" of
the school's code of conduct.
Screenshots of a post circulating on
social media allegedly show Coupland
sharing a link to a story about a rainbow
flag being raised in St. Petersburg,
Fla., accompanied with the comment
" It's the queers they should be hanging,
not the flag."
The Facebook account appeared to
have been deleted by Tuesday.
Coupland, who was a business professor
with the college, did not immediately
respond to a request for comment.
" We were made aware by a former
student who sent us the post and a complaint
about the content of the post,"
Wiley told The Canadian Press. " The
posts were deeply concerning to the
college due to the nature of their content.
It was clear to us that we needed to
investigate them immediately."
Wiley said Coupland was put on leave
with pay Monday as the college began
its investigation.
St. Lawrence College, which has
campuses in Brockville, Cornwall and
Kingston, said the comments are not a
reflection of its values.
" We also believe this is an opportunity
to get even better, in that we are inclusive
and we are supportive," Wiley
said.
She said the college has strict policies
that guide the conduct of its employees.
Jolisa Masucol, who graduated from
the college in the spring, said she was
disappointed the school issued a statement
on its social- media channels about
the incident Monday, despite it first being
reported by a local news outlet last
week.
" It reflects poorly on the school's
public relations strategy," she said.
" I would have appreciated them to
address the issue head- on, but they
didn't."
Masucol, who didn't take a class with
Coupland but saw him in passing as he
shared an office with one of her professors,
noted the college is nonetheless an
inclusive community.

O TTAWA - The 26- year- old wife of retired
senator Rod Zimmer, who was arrested at
gunpoint after she greeted police at the front
door of the couple's home with two knives, pleaded
guilty Tuesday to possession of a weapon.
Maygan Sensenberger was given a suspended
sentence and placed on probation for 15 months for
the February 2015 confrontation.
" You were risking your own life," Ontario Court
Justice Robert Wadden told Sensenberger.
Sensenberger also pleaded guilty to mischief for
kicking out the rear window of a police car after
she was arrested in August 2014 over a disturbance
at a medical office, court heard. Police said
Sensenberger had used a lit cigarette and a handheld
fan as a weapon against two women.
" She was belligerent and fully resistant during
the arrest," according to an agreed statement of
facts read in court Tuesday.
She was taken to hospital, where she was restrained
in a full- body mesh for the safety of herself
and others. Defence lawyer Paolo Giancaterino
said although the facts about the August arrest
were read in court Tuesday, his client didn't admit
to them. Sensenberger was charged in that incident
but never showed up for her first court appearance
or to a police station for fingerprinting.
A warrant was issued for her arrest, but she
wasn't taken into custody until Feb. 22 of this year,
when paramedics were called to her home after
her husband fell down the stairs. When paramedics
arrived, Sensenberger was drunk, yelling and
swearing. Zimmer, 72, told paramedics Sensenberger
gets angry when she drinks and that she had
been drinking the entire night before.
When police arrived to help paramedics, Sensenberger
was still belligerent and slammed a door on
an officer. Eventually, she calmed down and police
left, only to return the same day after they realized
a warrant was out for Sensenberger's arrest.
Sensenberger opened the door holding two kitchen
knives. The officers drew their guns and ordered
her to drop the knives before they arrested her.
Since her arrest, Sensenberger completed a rehab
program and has been sober since. She has been
living with her family in Collingwood, Ont., court
heard. " I intend to stay in recovery, and I apologize
for my actions, your honour," Sensenberger said.
In September 2012, Sensenberger pleaded guilty
to causing a disturbance on an Air Canada flight
and was given a suspended sentence.
Zimmer is one of five Manitoba senators or former
senators who were ordered last month to repay
ineligible expense claims. Auditor general Michael
Ferguson flagged $ 176,014 claimed by Zimmer
for what Ferguson said was non- Senate travel and
a housing allowance that shouldn't have been allowed.
Zimmer resigned from the Senate in 2013.
