From the moment singer Colin Meloy walked onto the stage alone with a glass of red wine, wind blowing in his hair, to sing The Singer Addresses His Audience as the rest of the band slowly joined him, it was clear Wednesday night at the Burt would be no different. " Nice place! A little hot," Meloy joked about the rather steamy theatre, as many audience members continued to fan themselves in time to the music all night long. Here as part of the Winnipeg Folk Festival's all- year concert series Hear All Year, the Decemberists played through a massive set that touched on much of their seven- album back catalogue. The top half blew by in a blink, the band rolling through Down By the Water , Calamity Song ( including opener with original lyrics " Hank, eat your oatmeal") and Billy Liar , among other tunes. There's no point in adding " crowd favourite" to any of these songs, as each one elicited the same enthusiastic wave of woos and claps from the adoring audience. There's an ease about the Decemberists' performance, both in their mannerisms and in the relaxed way they play their instruments, that makes the whole experience feel very welcoming and comfortable. There's no performer- audience barrier, but instead a performer- audience connection, especially evident in the hilarious audienceparticipation moments of the evening, of which there were many. Meloy is the perfect frontman - incredibly charming and funny, wasting no time making jokes about this Friday's One Direction concert ( in case people were confused and at the wrong event), how much he loathes his harmonica holder and pandering for louder applause before ending the second song of the night, July, July! The highlight of the set, and of the newest album What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World , was single Make You Better - it's one of those nearly perfect songs that peaks at and dips at exactly right moments, with the sweetest melody and lyrics that make your stomach turn in the best way. After getting called out twice for having a laptop at the show ( I'm just trying to do my job, Meloy!), the main portion of the evening ended with a stunning version of The Beginning Song . Two minutes later, to no one's surprise, the band was welcomed back to the stage with a standing ovation to play an encore. At press time the entire audience were still on its feet while the band charged its way through Hazards of Love 1 . MainenativeAlySpaltro, betterknown by her stage name Lady Lamb, opened the night with a set of guitar- driven, fast- paced jam- session- type songs - though you may not have known it was her because, indulging in the biggest pet peeve of every reviewer the world over, she never clearly said who she is. Regardless, her voice is powerful, easily rising above the edgy pop- rock melodies. She has an almost bluesy twang that becomes more evident as she swings from note to note in the heart of her vocal range, with a soft vibrato hanging in her lower register. Spaltro did struggle at the tip- top of her range, though, not quite making it to some of the more difficult notes.
