So far this year, the team at Children's
has seen a number of injuries
associated with popular summertime
activities, such as cycling, skateboarding
or playing sports. These injuries
usually involve broken bones or
sprains.
However, we are also seeing a rise in
the number of more serious injuries,
often from activities that parents may
not always recognize as being risky.
So far this year, children have been
treated for injuries sustained after
falling out of a window, burns received
from playing around the firepit and
lacerations from getting too close to a
lawn mower.
Injuries such as these often happen
because kids and parents alike
underestimate the potential for harm.
Fortunately, they can be avoided by
simply by anticipating problems before
they happen.
Start inside your home. So far this
year, at least three young children
have died from injuries after falling
from windows in Canada, and there
have been many reports of falls and
injuries in cities across the country. In
Winnipeg alone, at least three children
been seen in the emergency department
after falling from a window this
summer.
The mistake some people make
is thinking a screen can prevent a
child from falling. What they may not
realize is screens on windows aren't
meant to keep anyone from falling out.
Instead, they are designed to pop out
for fire safety and can be dislodged by
the weight of a toddler.
Children love to climb, and they are
naturally curious, so you must supervise
them as they play near screened
or open windows. Don't underestimate
a child's mobility; children begin
climbing before they can walk. Keep
furniture and other items away from
windows to discourage children from
climbing, and look into installing window
guards on windows above ground
level, but don't block your escape in
case of fire.
Firepits are also often overlooked as
a potential hazard. Each year in Winnipeg,
a handful of children are treated
for burn injuries. So far this year,
Children's Hospital has seen several
children with serious burn injuries.
Fire is fascinating to young children
who are too young to appreciate
the inherent danger. They like to put
sticks, grasses and other items into
the fire, which can ignite quickly and
cause a burn. Additionally, the use of
fire starter and other accelerants can
flare up or spread fire to blankets and
clothing.
To prevent burns, the most important
precaution is to have constant adult
supervision around fires - someone
whose sole job is to watch the children
and ensure they are not getting too
close or playing with fire.
You can also try creating a no- go
zone around your firepit. Use chalk,
spray paint or stones to create a metrewide
circle around the pit, then explain
to your children they should not cross
that circle, as it puts them too close to
the fire. Also teach them firepits stay
hot long after the flames go out, even
if doused with water.
Surprisingly, lawn mowers still
account for a number of injuries each
summer. I think that's partly because
even though people understand these
machines are dangerous, they don't
realize how quickly an accident can
happen. This summer, we have already
treated several serious injuries resulting
from lawn- mower mishaps.
It's worth noting lawn- mower injuries,
in fact, are the leading cause of
foot and ankle amputations to children,
so incidents involving these
machines are not rare events. Health
experts suggest the best way to avoid
an injury is to simply not operate
a riding mower when children are
present. Don't let your kids ride on
the mower, even with an adult. It's
also worth noting the American Academy
of Pediatrics recommends that
children not use a push lawn mower
until at least 12 years of age, and they
not operate a riding lawn mower until
16.
Keep these safety tips in mind, and
keep your kids out of the emergency
department this summer!

Hospital.
Seeing risks in kids' summer activities
Easy to underestimate
dangers of the season
G OOD ol' summertime. The kids are
out of school and everyone is up for
having a little bit of fun in the sun.
Unfortunately, all that extra outdoor
activity often translates into more visits to the
city's emergency departments.
That's especially true where I work as an
emergency doctor at the Children's Hospital at
Health Sciences Centre.
