A 10- year- old Jack Russell terrier, given that name by both his owner, Taylor Funk, and his rescuer, Melissa Chung, has found his way home after more than a month and 400 kilometres. The little dog went missing June 20 from Funk's farm north of Roblin and somehow ended up in Winnipeg, where he was found by Chung, 28, and her partner, Eldon Wu, 32, on July 9. Owner and pet were reunited Wednesday after Funk, 22, saw Chung's post about Duke on Winnipeg Lost Dog Alert's Facebook page. It's shocking enough that Duke was found in Winnipeg, never mind that Duke was actually his name. " By the time we got him inside the house after we found him, I think I had already fallen in love with him. We cleaned him up and I just went online and looked at common dog names and we started calling out names from the list. Duke was one he seemed to respond to and seemed to like," Chung said. " That's what we had been calling him for two weeks, Duke, Dukey, The Duke. It is pretty incredible that it was the same name." " It's amazing, it's unreal. I am just overwhelmed," Funk said Thursday, just before she and Duke headed home to Roblin. " I'm so grateful to have him back, but he was in Winnipeg. I live four hours away. It's just amazing that we got in contact with Melissa and got him back. I just can't thank her enough. The chances of it being that type of person who finds him, she did so much for him and looked so hard for his owner. It's a miracle." Duke, like most Jack Russell terriers, is a highenergy dog and loves to go for runs. When he didn't come home June 20, Funk was devastated. She had bought Duke as a puppy when she was 12 using her own money from her first job working at her aunt's campground. " It's been a rough month for me. I just couldn't get my brain to stop wandering, I was having trouble concentrating and every night I was dreaming I found him in all these places," Funk said. Funk had put out alerts everywhere she could think of within an hour radius of Roblin. Last Sunday, someone suggested she reach out farther so Funk posted on the Brandon Area Lost Animals' ( BALA) Facebook page. BALA representatives checked the Winnipeg Lost Dog Alert site and found Chung's post. Later that same day, Funk was on the phone with Chung. " I have a huge respect for these ( lost dog/ animal) organizations I didn't even know they were this active and strong," Funk said. " These people who care about animals, they will really do anything to help you." Chung said Duke was muddy and wet when they found him July 9 in the street near their Point Douglas home, which is near the river. They were prepared to keep him if his owner wasn't found. " I grew up with dogs and I just couldn't believe how smart and well- behaved he was. He was just so sweet and everyone that met him fell in love with him," said Chung who also lost a dog when she was a teenager, a Labrador named Girlie. " I know that feeling of losing your dog and the pain of not knowing what happened. It's terrible. I just knew someone was looking for him." As for Duke, Funk said he will still have his freedom on the property, but there will be some changes. " He's just such a happy little dog and loves his exercise, but I'm definitely going to tag him, get him a microchip and a tattoo," Funk said. " You just don't think, in a small town, that your dog is going to end up in Winnipeg. I'll be doing everything I can to not go through this again." How Duke got to Winnipeg and what happened during his lengthy disappearance remain a mystery. Funk thinks someone picked him up near the highway outside Roblin and took him to Winnipeg. Once in the city, he may have been kept by someone for a while. Duke's photo was reportedly on Winnipeg Lost Dog Alert on June 23, but there are indications he ended up at the city's animal services where he was either claimed or adopted. " I've no idea what happened but it looks like someone had him before Melissa found him. I don't know if he got away or what. It's just so weird," Funk said. City officials are looking into whether Duke was in their care. ashley. prest@ freepress. mb. ca Little hobo finds a way home Missing Roblin pet, owner reunited in Winnipeg By Ashley Prest SUBMITTED PHOTO Taylor Funk of Roblin holds Duke, her 10- year- old Jack Russell terrier found in Winnipeg by Melissa Chung.
