NOT BE s ATTENTION AT TENTION N E W C A R SHO P P E R S NEW CAR SHOPPERS L IBERAL Leader Justin Trudeau ruled out the possibility of a Liberal- NDP coalition at a Winnipeg news conference Thursday morning, citing " fundamental differences" between the parties. " A formal coalition is out of the question," Trudeau said in St. Boniface. NDP Leader Tom Mulcair said his party has always seen the defeat of the Conservatives as a priority. " We know that they've done a lot of harm, and we want to start repairing the damage that ( Prime Minister Stephen Harper) has done," Mulcair said Thursday from Amherstburg, Ont. " We've always worked with others in the past, but every time I've raised this prospect with Justin Trudeau, he's slammed the door on it." Trudeau said it's a marriage his party can do without. " We do not believe in reducing the amount of options Canadians have at the ballot box, and moreover on the issues that in which we are in direct contradiction with the NDP on, we need to make sure we're providing a better and stronger government," he said. Those issues, said Trudeau, include the NDP's child- care- spaces plan, and Mulcair's stance against the creation of a new tax bracket for the highest income earners, as well as Mulcair's position on the secession of Quebec. Tory MP Pierre Poilievre said any Liberal- New Democrat coalition would result in a " Greek economic policy." " It looks like the NDP and Liberals are shaping up for a risky, high- tax coalition that will take more money out of the pockets of middle- class families," he said in Fredericton, N. B. Trudeau was flanked by local candidates for the upcoming federal election. He emphasized party platform points, including hammering out a plan for economic growth and a tax break for the middle class, and criticized Harper for what he called " the worst ( economic) growth record of any prime minister in about 80 years." The Liberal leader criticized the Tories' recent universal child care benefit for " not giving enough help to people who need it," saying it " will be dinging people at tax time next year." As an alternative, Trudeau promised a Grit government would replace the UCCB with " a larger benefit cheque for the families that truly need it," - those making less than $ 150,000 a year - with nothing going to families making more than $ 200,000. Trudeau also emphasized the Liberal plan for a $ 3- billion tax break for middle- class families, paid for by a new tax bracket affecting the top one per cent of income earners. Another of his talking points was climate reform. Trudeau condemned the Tory's cancellation of funding of the experimental lakes area, and stated a commitment to infrastructure investments to adapt to climate change, including spending on transit and housing infrastructure and flood protection. " We can no longer make a choice between what's good for the environment and what's good for the economy," Trudeau said. In response to questions about the concerns of aboriginal voters, Trudeau said the party is working to reach out, " folding ( indigenous authorities) into the process." " The Liberal party understands how important it is that the Canadian government re- engages with First Nations, Mtis Nations and Inuit peoples on a nation- to- nation basis, fundamentally and respectfully, and in partnership, whether it's on issues like the needed national public inquiry into missing and murdered ( aboriginal women), which is a commitment the Liberal party has made and continues to make. but also, stepping up on First Nations education." " We need to step up on housing and infrastructure, and how we're developing our natural resources in a way that is respectful and in partnership and goes to the spirit and intent of the original treaty relationship. It's high time, not just after a decade, but after many generations and even centuries of a broken relationship that we get on the right track," Trudeau said. Asked how he will engage indigenous voters, Trudeau said the party is working to reach out to authorities and young activists within First Nations communities. He criticized the government's " general neglect and patronizing top- down approach" to aboriginal Canadians' concerns. - with files from The Canadian Press aidan. geary@ freepress. mb. ca Liberal- NDP coalition a non- starter: Trudeau Grit leader emphasizes party platform points By Aidan Geary MIKAELA MACKENZIE / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau speaks in St. Boniface Thursday.
