American arrested on child- porn charges
AN Ohio man accused of distributing child sexual- abuse
imagery has been arrested in Winnipeg.
The Winnipeg Police Service's internet child exploitation
unit said Friday it was contacted by police in Ohio about an
ongoing investigation in the U. S. The WPS was told its Ohio
counterpart had found a " significant quantity" of child sexual-
abuse imagery after executing a warrant, and officers
believed the suspect was in Winnipeg on a business trip.
Winnipeg police and members of the Canada Border
Services Agency arrested a man at a hotel near downtown
July 17. Darren Eccles, 42, of North Olmsted, Ohio, is facing
charges in the United States related to the possession and
distribution of child sexual- abuse imagery. Eccles remains
in custody with the CBSA.
Foursome nabbed after break- and- enters
POLICE have arrested a quartet of suspects following a
string of garage break- ins and thefts in Whyte Ridge.
On Thursday, at about 3: 30 a. m., police got a call about
a potential break- and- enter in a garage in the 200 block
of Sheffield Road. Four suspects - a 20- year- old man, a
14- year- old boy and two 13- year- old boys - were arrested
without incident.
Further investigation revealed the four were responsible
for 11 separate car and garage break- ins in Whyte Ridge.
One suspect, a 14- year- old girl, is still at large.
No punishment for helicopter broadcast
OFFICERS who accidentally broadcast an at- times explicit
conversation from the cockpit of the Winnipeg police helicopter
last month will not be disciplined, police said.
On June 22, the crew members in the cockpit of Air1
inadvertently activated the helicopter's PA system, according
to the Winnipeg Police Service, playing their private
conversation out loud over parts of the city and giving surprised
Winnipeggers an earful. The conversation included
swearing and references to oral sex.
A section of a police radio dispatch was broadcast as well.
The WPS said in a press release Friday the incident was
" not a deliberate act," and " no disciplinary action will be
taken against the crew members involved." To prevent
future blush- worthy broadcasts, changes have been made
to the helicopter's wiring system and a switch activating
the PA system has been modified so it can't be accidentally
turned on, police said.
Winnipeg police received several calls about the incident,
and have contacted each caller individually. " Again, the
Winnipeg Police Service apologizes for any embarrassment
this may have caused," the statement reads.
Stolen special- needs bicycle recovered
A specialized bicycle for a person with special needs has
been returned to its owner.
Winnipeg police said Friday the bike, constructed by
Freedom Concept and worth about $ 2,500, had been recovered
and thanked the media and public for their assistance.
The bike had been stolen from a garage in the area
of Warde Avenue and Paddington Road some time between
July 3 and July 13.
