E VER heard of hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia?
Thirteen- year- old Zebadiah McQuade
has. Even more impressive, he can say it out
loud.
" I wrote that on the fridge and kept saying it
every time I passed it until I could pronounce
it properly," Zebadiah said. He loves learning
new vocabulary, and that mouthful is his favourite
word. Ironically, the term means " fear
of long words" - an interesting dilemma for
its sufferers, he noted with a laugh.
Even more than he likes learning words, Zebadiah
said he loves science. Just a few hours
earlier, he crushed a tin can with atmospheric
pressure - " 14.7 pounds ( of pressure) per
square inch," he said - created by taking the
can from boiling water to a bowl of ice.
" I definitely enjoy being a little more handson
with my work, school work and stuff," he
said.
That attitude might be why Zebadiah enjoys
Pioneer Camp so much, and why he goes back
year after year. It was there he learned valued
skills such as knot- tying and canoeing, and
got to try brand- new things such as archery.
There's also the ever- changing " evening program,"
a daily outdoor game his mom jokingly
calls " structured chaos" but Zebadiah said is
his " favourite part of the day."
Aside from the plain, simple fun of being
outside, Zebadiah said he values camp because
of the " tight- knit" camaraderie between
campers and even counsellors.
" I guess at camp, it's sort of like a small community,"
he said. " People who are there, not to
say they care more, but they stick together...
they care about each other. We're more like
friends than, ' Hello, I'm here to work on you.' "
Zebadiah's younger sisters Sarah, 11, and
Mabelle, 9, already went to camp this summer,
and it was Mabelle's very first time.
Both girls celebrated their birthdays there
and were hard put to choose a favourite part.
Their youngest sister, Aoife, 6, also went to
a three- day camper- in- training program,
where she got an award for being " most mischievous."
Although his sisters already went, this
nearly became the first summer in six years
Zebadiah missed camp. He and his sisters go
to camp through the Sunshine Fund, but the
charity was short of funding this year, and Zebadiah
was put on a wait- list. Two weeks ago,
a spot opened up, meaning Zebadiah gets to
head to camp on Aug. 3.
Liz Kovach, executive director of the Manitoba
Camping Association and the Sunshine
Fund, said a big part of this year's Sunshine
Fund is the Canadian Tire Jumpstart program,
which donated $ 45,000 to help send kids
to camp. That support will help offset costs for
more than 600 kids - but with around 1,000
applications a year, additional funding is still
needed, and the Sunshine Fund seeks further
public support.
If you'd like to help send kids to camp, send
cheques to the Winnipeg Free Press Sunshine
Fund at 302- 960 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB,
R3G 0R4.
You can also donate in person at that address
using cash, Visa or MasterCard. Or you can go
to mbcamping. ca and follow the donate now
link to CanadaHelps. org. Tax receipts will be
issued for donations.
