P ROVINCIAL health officials say they've discovered mosquitoes infected with West Nile virus ( WNV) in Portage la Prairie. The infected Culex tarsalis mosquitoes were collected in an insect trap last week. So far this year, there have been no human cases of West Nile identified in Manitoba, officials say. And to date, mainly nuisance mosquitoes - as opposed to Culex, which can spread the disease - have been caught in provincial traps, they say. However, the number of Culex tarsalis mosquitoes is rising, they add, particularly in the southern portion of the Prairie Mountain Health region, which takes in such western Manitoba communities as Boissevain, Deloraine, Brandon, Virden Dauphin, Roblin and Swan River. The risk of exposure to WNV is expected to increase in the coming weeks, particularly if warm nighttime temperatures persist, as these are ideal conditions for Culex tarsalis development and activity, the province said Friday in its first West Nile update of the season. It cautioned Manitobans the province is now entering the highest risk period for West Nile transmission.
