Killer on ' lunatic' fringe
LAFAYETTE, La. - John Russell
Houser terrified his own family and
ranted in online forums about African-
Americans, Jews and gays long before
he opened fire in a Louisiana movie
theatre, killing two women and injuring
nine people last week.
Houser, a mentally ill 59- year- old,
had lost his wife and his house and left
behind a paper trail documenting a
long history of seeking vengeance.
In Houser's hometown of Columbus,
Ga., some former neighbours say
his life was a decades- long collision
course with disaster.
" He's been known as a lunatic and
a fool around this neck of the woods
for years," said Patrick Williams, an
antiques dealer who once filed a police
report alleging Houser sold him a
stolen iron fence at a flea market. " I
wasn't a bit surprised when I saw his
picture on TV. And no one else that
knew him was surprised either."
Neighbours said Houser flew a Confederate
flag, passed doomsday fliers
around his neighbourhood, pounded
out angry online missives about corruption
and injustice and spouted
admiration for Adolf Hitler.
Obama speaks to Kenyans
NAIROBI, Kenya - Declaring Kenya
at a " crossroads" between promise and
peril, U. S. President Barack Obama
on Sunday pressed the nation of his
father's birth to root out corruption,
treat women and minorities as equal
citizens and take responsibility for its
future.
Closing his historic visit with an
address to the Kenyan people, Obama
traced the arc of the country's evolution
from colonialism to independence,
as well as his own family's history
here. Obama said young Kenyans are
no longer constrained by the limited
options of his grandfather, a cook for
the country's former British rulers, or
his father, who left to seek an education
in America.
" Because of Kenya's progress -
because of your potential - you can
build your future right here, right
now," Obama told the crowd of 4,500
packed into a sports arena in the capital
of Nairobi. But he bluntly warned
Kenya must make " tough choices" to
bolster its fragile democracy and fastgrowing
economy.
Obama's visit here, his first as
president, captivated a country that
views him as a local son. Thick crowds
lined the roadways to watch the presidential
motorcade speed through the
city Sunday, some climbing on rooftops
to get a better view. The audience
inside the arena chanted his name as
he finished his remarks.
The devil made them do it
DETROIT - Several hundred people
attended a mass at a Detroit Catholic
church to protest a 2.6- metre- tall
bronze statue of Satan hundreds of
people also lined up to see.
The Satanic Temple had said it
would unveil the statue Saturday at
a Detroit location only people with
tickets would know. Hundreds lined up
Saturday evening to get the tickets as
Christian protesters rallied nearby.
Earlier Saturday, the Detroit News
said 200 to 250 people attended mass
at St. Joseph Church to protest against
the satanic event.
The statue had been planned for the
state capitol in Oklahoma City until
Oklahoma's Supreme Court banned all
religious displays on Capitol grounds.
The Satanic Temple now says it
wants to erect it outside Arkansas'
statehouse, where a Ten Commandments
monument is also planned.
A bid court could refuse
BOSTON - A federal appeals court
is set to hear arguments on former
Boston crime boss James ( Whitey)
Bulger's bid to overturn his racketeering
convictions.
Bulger's lawyers say his right to a
fair trial was violated when a judge
barred him from telling the jury about
his claim a federal prosecutor promised
him immunity. The judge found
Bulger offered no hard evidence.
Prosecutors say the evidence of
Bulger's guilt was overwhelming and
he should not get a new trial.
Bulger was convicted of participating
in 11 murders in the 1970s and
' 80s. He fled Boston in 1995 and remained
one of the FBI's most wanted
fugitives until he was captured in
Santa Monica, Calif., in 2011.
The case is set to go before the 1st
U. S. Circuit Court of Appeals today.
