Galacticos on the men's side and Blue United Soccer on the women's side won their respective master's finals, booking their chance to represent Manitoba at the western masters championships in B. C. in September . Juventus scored a 3- 1 win over Italinter SC in the senior men's final, while Galacticos edged out Rovers FC on penalty kicks 5- 3 following a 2- 2 draw after 90 minutes. On the women's side, Bisons FC down WSA Northstars 4- 2 while Blue United Soccer beat Winnipeg Storm 1- 0. The western masters takes place Sept. 24- 27. The national championships go Oct. 7- 12. Coach punched reporter? MEXICO CITY - The coach of Mexico's national soccer team is known for his histrionic displays of emotion during games. Now Miguel Herrera's off- field composure is being questioned after a television sports anchor claimed the coach punched him at the Philadelphia airport Sunday following Mexico's 3- 1 victory over Jamaica to take the Gold Cup. Television Azteca sports anchor Christian Martinoli described the incident Monday on a Television Azteca program. He said Herrera apparently wanted to hit him again but fellow sports commentator Luis Garcia got between them. Martinoli has criticized Herrera's performance as coach. The Mexican Soccer Federation did not immediately confirm the incident. Manziel remains No. 2 BEREA, Ohio - Browns coach Mike Pettine has been impressed with quarterback Johnny Manziel's improvement but said the Heisman Trophy winner remains firmly behind Josh McCown for the starting job. Meeting with Cleveland reporters to preview training camp, Pettine said Mc- Cown, signed during the off- season, likely will be the starter for the Sept. 13 season opener against the New York Jets but he wouldn't guarantee it. Manziel, whose rough rookie season was followed by a stay in rehab, reported to the team's facility Monday. Unlike last summer, Manziel did not make any headlines with his off- field conduct and Pettine was impressed the QB recently worked out with former NFL coach Jon Gruden. Woman coaching Cardinals TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona Cardinals have hired Jen Welter to coach inside linebackers through their upcoming training camp and pre- season. The Cardinals say Welter is believed to be the first woman to hold a coaching position in the NFL. Welter played running back and on special teams in 2014 for the Texas Revolution of the Indoor Football League, becoming the first woman to hold a non- kicking position for a men's professional sports league. She coached linebackers and special teams for the Revolution last season, becoming the first woman to coach in a men's pro football league. Welter played linebacker for more than 14 seasons with the Dallas Diamonds of the Women's Football Alliance and holds a master's degree in sports psychology. Boston off hook for bid BOSTON - Oh, about that $ 25 million. Don't worry about it, Boston. A U. S. Olympic Committee official said the federation will not pursue payment under a clause in its contract with Boston that put the USOC on the hook for the $ 25- million bid if it pulled out of the running. The USOC and Boston 2024 leaders mutually agreed to end the bid Monday, opening the door for the USOC to possibly choose another city before the Sept. 15 deadline. Technically, the USOC could have pursued the payment because Boston was involved in the decision to pull out. Bid organizers had purchased insurance to protect against the possible penalty. But USOC spokesman Patrick Sandusky said: " Boston gave its best shot in bidding for the Olympic Games. The USOC will not be seeking this fee." Victorino joins Angels ANAHEIM, Calif. - The Los Angeles Angels acquired veteran outfielder Shane Victorino and more than $ 3.8 million from the Boston Red Sox Monday for infielder Josh Rutledge. The 34- year- old Victorino is a two- time World Series champion, a two- time all- star and a four- time Gold Glove winner. He has spent the past three years in Boston, batting .245 in just 33 games this season with two stints on the disabled list. Overall, Victorino has hit .276 with 108 home runs, 486 RBI and 229 stolen bases in 12 major league seasons, including stints with the San Diego Padres, Philadelphia Phillies, and Los Angeles Dodgers. Boston will pay the Angels $ 3,801,639 as part of the trade. By the time Victorino reports today, he will be owed $ 5,655,737 of his $ 15- million salary this year. Victorino mostly played right field for Boston, but is likely to play in left field against left- handers for the Angels. Los Angeles has struggled at the position since owner Arte Moreno got rid of Josh Hamilton in April. Matt Joyce was expected to be the primary starter in left, but he is batting .178 in an awful season. Joyce also might have incurred a concussion in Sunday's win over Texas. Rutledge has spent this season in the minors after playing in 105 games for the Angels last season. Fun playing clean: A- Rod ARLINGTON, Texas - Alex Rodriguez says there is a certain amount of pride being 40 years old and still playing in the major leagues. A- Rod marked his 40th birthday Monday night in the New York Yankees' series opener at the Texas Rangers, the team that gave him his first huge contract. Rodriguez says there was a time when hitting home runs and being a great player were all that mattered, and that the more homers he hit " would justify for whatever behaviour" he had off the field. He didn't specifically mention his season- long suspension last year for violations of baseball's drug agreement and labour contract. He says this year has been a nice reminder that good things can happen playing clean and working hard. NFL finalizing ball policy THE NFL is preparing to send out instructions to game officials and teams explaining new rules for inspecting footballs. Two people familiar with the league's plans told The Associated Press proper inflation of the footballs will be documented as part of the new policy. But those people, speaking on condition of anonymity because the league has not released information on the new policy, say no instructions have been sent out yet. The first pre- season game is Aug. 9. Among the details being considered for the new policy: having game officials appointed by the referee inspect the 48 footballs for each game more than two hours before kickoff. In the past, the referee inspected the footballs. Also under consideration is checking pressure readings for every ball before the game and then again at halftime. The changes stem from the use of underinflated footballs in the AFC championship game, which led to a four- game suspension for New England quarterback Tom Brady, a $ 1- million fine for the Patriots, and the loss of two draft picks. - staff / the wire services SPORTS In Brief Johnny Manziel Shane Victorino SCOTT KANE / THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Unloading Kolten Wong of the St. Louis Cardinals follows through on a grand slam during the fourth inning of a baseball game against the Cincinnati Reds at Busch Stadium in St. Louis Monday.
