RCMP Insp. Stacey Talbot said Tuesday the remains found in April on a rural property near Leduc, south of Edmonton, have been identified as those of Corrie Ottenbreit. " We consider Corrie's death to be a homicide," Talbot said. " We do not know what happened to Corrie. We are asking for the public's assistance." Ottenbreit, an Edmonton sex- trade worker, was last seen in the city in May 2004. The 27- year- old disappeared after telling her husband she was going out to work the streets. Police have now found the remains of four women within an eight- kilometre radius in Leduc County. " One of the investigative theories in relation to these deaths is we may be dealing with a serial predator," said Talbot. She declined to provide specific details about where the remains were found or about the investigation. Two of the other three women found in the area were also sex- trade workers. The remains of Katie Ballantyne, 40, were found in a field in July 2003, less than three months after she disappeared. Delores Brower, 33, disappeared the same month as Ottenbreit. In April, police confirmed her remains were found on a rural property near Leduc. Another woman, Amber Tuccaro, disappeared in August 2010 after she got into a vehicle with an unknown man south of Edmonton. The 20- year- old had just arrived from Fort McMurray with her infant son and a female friend. Police later released an excerpt of a phone call from Tuccaro in the truck that picked up the voice of the male driver. " You'd better not be taking me anywhere I don't want to go," she's overheard telling the driver at one point. Her remains were found in September 2012. A Mountie- led missing persons task force dubbed Project KARE has been investigating the deaths and disappearances of vulnerable individuals throughout Alberta since 2003. Talbot said Ottenbreit was identified using DNA analysis of a hair sample she provided to the task force in December 2003. - The Canadian Press Serial killer might be behind deaths: RCMP By Dean Bennett THE CANADIAN PRESS Corrie Ottenbreit disappeared in 2004. PLATTSBURGH, N. Y. - A former prison worker tearfully pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges of aiding two convicted killers by smuggling hacksaw blades and other tools to the pair, who later broke out in a brazen, elaborate escape that captured the world's attention for three weeks. Joyce Mitchell was an instructor in the tailor shop at the Clinton Correctional Facility in upstate New York. Her lawyer, Stephen Johnston, said she realizes she made a " horrible mistake" by getting involved with Richard Matt and David Sweat, who escaped from the maximum- security prison on June 6. Matt was shot and killed by searchers June 26, about 50 kilometres west of the prison. Sweat was captured near the Canadian border two days later. Mitchell, 51, faces a sentence of between 28 months and seven years in prison under terms of a plea deal with prosecutors. Sentencing is set for Sept. 28. Johnston said his client will not be able to post bail. - The Associated Press Guilty plea for role in prison escape B LOOMINGTON, Minn. - An avid American hunter accused of illegally killing a protected lion in Zimbabwe said Tuesday he thought everything about his trip was legal and wasn't aware of the animal's status " until the end of the hunt." Walter Palmer, who has a felony record in the U. S. related to shooting a black bear in Wisconsin, released his statement through a public relations firm after being identified by Zimbabwean authorities as the American involved in the July hunt. They said he is being sought on poaching charges, but Palmer said he hasn't heard from U. S. or Zimbabwean authorities. " I had no idea that the lion I took was a known, local favourite, was collared and part of a study until the end of the hunt. I relied on the expertise of my local professional guides to ensure a legal hunt," said Palmer, a dentist who lives in the Minneapolis suburb of Eden Prairie. According to U. S. court records, Palmer pleaded guilty in 2008 to making false statements to the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service about a black bear he fatally shot in western Wisconsin. Palmer had a permit to hunt but shot the animal outside the authorized zone in 2006, then tried to pass it off as being killed elsewhere, according to court documents. He was given one year probation and fined nearly US$ 3,000. Palmer was identified by the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force, the Safari Operators Association of Zimbabwe and police as the American facing poaching charges for the crossbow killing of Cecil, a well- known and protected lion. Local authorities in Zimbabwe allege the lion was lured from a protected area and killed in early July. Zimbabwean conservationists said the American paid US$ 50,000 for the trip. The lion's death has outraged animal conservationists and others, including U. S. Rep. Betty Mc- Collum, a Minnesota Democrat. In a statement late Tuesday, the congresswoman called for an investigation to see whether any U. S. laws were violated. No one answered the door at Palmer's home Tuesday, and a woman who came out of his dental practice in nearby Bloomington said he wasn't there and wasn't taking patients Tuesday. A Facebook page for the practice was taken offline Tuesday after users flooded it with comments condemning Palmer's involvement in the hunt. Board records show Palmer was the subject of a sexual harassment complaint settled in 2006, with Palmer admitting no wrongdoing and agreeing to pay a former receptionist more than US$ 127,000. - The Associated Press Dentist says he thought hunt was legal May 1- Oct. 31 July 31 Full Aug 6 Last Aug 14 New Aug 22 First Sunrise: ....................................... 5: 54 a. m.
