TORONTO . Higher oil prices propelled the
Toronto Stock Exchange to a stronger finish
on Tuesday as most sectors gained some traction,
ending seven consecutive sessions of declines.
The S& P/ TSX composite index rose 75.99
points to 14,077.36, while the Canadian dollar
gained 0.7 of a cent at US77.36 cents.
Driving the market higher was the TSX
energy sector, which rose two per cent as
light crude gained 59 cents to US$ 47.98 on
the New York Mercantile Exchange.
It was the first time in five days that oil futures
moved up, driven by the anticipation
that weekly crude inventories could show
a decline when the figures are released on
Wednesday. Natural gas gained three cents to
US$ 2.82.
Gold prices slipped 20 cents to
US$ 1,096.30 an ounce as traders awaited any
signs from the U. S. Federal Reserve's two- day
monetary policy meeting on the timing of an
expected interest rate hike.
Meanwhile on Wall Street, investors found
reason to celebrate from a slate of positive results
from U. S. companies.
The Dow Jones industrial average gained
189.68 points at 17,630.27, while the Nasdaq
added 49.43 points at 5089.21 and the S& P
500 climbed 25.61 points to 2093.25.

FIFA hikes airport traffic
PASSENGER traffic at Winnipeg
Richardson International Airport
continued on an upward trend in the
second quarter, aided by thousands
of international visitors for the
FIFA Women's World Cup.
In June, 326,395 passengers
went through the terminal - the
airport's fourth- busiest month this
decade.
Total traffic was up 4.28 per cent
for the quarter, compared with the
same period in 2014. It marks the
fifth- consecutive four per cent- plus
quarterly increase after declines
throughout 2013.
Revenue was $ 26.9 million for
the second quarter, compared with
$ 24.2 million for the same period
in 2014. Earnings before interest,
depreciation and taxes were $ 13.7
million, compared to $ 11.4 million
for the same period in 2014.
In June, NewLeaf Travel Company
Inc. announced it will make
the airport its headquarters. The
ultra- low cost carrier said it plans
to hire up to as many as 750 people
and hopes to begin flying out of
Winnipeg this summer.

SAN FRANCISCO - Microsoft's
new Windows 10 operating system
debuts today, as the longtime leader
in PC software hopes giving the
upgrade away for free will help
it carve out a new role in a world
where people increasingly rely on
smartphones, tablets and information
stored online.
The company is counting on tens
or even hundreds of millions of
people to download its latest release
in the coming months. Many people
will also get Windows 10 as part
of new PCs. The launch will be accompanied
by a global marketing
campaign for an event the company
hopes will be pivotal - both for its
own future and for a vast audience
of computer users around the world.
Windows 10 is coming to PCs and
tablets first, but it's been designed
to run phones, game consoles and
even holographic headsets. It has
new features, a streamlined web
browser called Edge and a desktop
version of Cortana, the online assistant
that is Microsoft's answer to
Google Now and Apple's Siri.
Still, the company insists Windows
10 will seem familiar to users
of Windows 7, the six- year- old operating
system still running on most
PCs. Microsoft and PC makers want
to erase the memory of the last big
update, 2012' s Windows 8, which
alienated many with its jarring,
unwieldy design.
Microsoft skipped the name
Windows 9, as if to distance itself
further from the last release. While
many analysts believe Windows 8
made sagging PC sales even worse,
it's unclear if Windows 10 will spur
the industry back to growth.
VW tops global sales
TOKYO - Volkswagen overtook
Toyota in global vehicle sales for
January to June, the first time the
German automaker has come out top
in the intensely competitive tallies.
Japanese automaker Toyota Motor
Corp. said Tuesday it sold 5.02 million
vehicles in the first six months
of this year, down 1.5 per cent from
the same period the previous year,
as sales struggled especially in the
languishing Japanese market.
Volkswagen AG said earlier this
month it sold 5.04 million vehicles
during the same period. Sales
were robust in Europe and North
America but fell in China, usually
a strong market for the company.
Its first- half sales were 0.5 per cent
down from the same period in 2014.
Detroit- based General Motors
Corp., the top- selling automaker
for more than seven decades until
being surpassed by Toyota in 2008,
is expected to report its figure
Thursday.
GM retook the sales crown in
2011, when Toyota's production was
hurt by the quake and tsunami in
northeastern Japan.
Toyota, which makes the Prius
hybrid, Camry sedan and Lexus luxury
models, made a big comeback
in 2012, and has been the world's
top- selling automaker for the past
three years.
Last year, Toyota sold 10.23 million
vehicles, beating Volkswagen
and General Motors. But it has said
it's expecting to sell fewer trucks
and cars this year, forecasting sales
will fall one per cent year- on- year
to 10.15 million vehicles.
Volkswagen sold 10.14 million
vehicles in 2014. VW makes the
Beetle and Golf cars, and also
has the Porsche, Bugatti and Audi
brands under its group.
GM was third last year, with 9.92
million vehicles sold.

C ALGARY - WestJet reported
record earnings Tuesday in its
second quarter, propelled by falling
fuel costs and a rising number of
passengers.
Gregg Saretsky, the CEO of the
Calgary- based airline, said he expects
the company's discounted rates and
updated WestJet Plus fares for its premium
economy class to drive similarly
strong results in the second half of the
year, despite a stumbling Canadian
economy.
" We're making a lot of Canadians
happy, and we're filling up a lot of
planes," he said in a conference call
with analysts and investors.
WestJet earned a second- quarter
profit of $ 61.6 million, up from $ 51.8
million in the same period last year.
Revenue improved to $ 942 million, up
from $ 930.3 million last year.
Earlier this year, WestJet said it
would add the Boeing 767 to its fleet of
aircraft, with an eye to using the larger
passenger jets on some of its longer
flights. The new planes will feature an
Economy Plus class, a cheaper alternative
to business class that still gives
travellers more room and extra amenities,
WestJet said.
" We're taking advantage of what
we're seeing in corporate Canada with
corporate travel policies changing and
companies not permitting their flyers
on segments under five hours to buy
business class fares," Saretsky said.
The quarterly results come as West-
Jet pilots are in the midst of a vote to
decide if they'll form the airline's first
union. The WestJet Professional Pilots
Association is pushing to unionize the
company's roughly 1,300 pilots, with
voting until Aug. 5.
Saretsky said he doesn't believe the
company's relationship with its workforce
will change, regardless of what
happens.
" We've enjoyed very good labour
relations with our employees over 19
years," he said. " I don't expect that
changes."
The WestJet Professional Flight Attendants
Association also wants to have
the airline's approximately 2,700 flight
attendants unionized, but they are still
working to have a majority of members
sign up before a vote can be held.
The company said Tuesday it is rolling
out a new in- flight entertainment
system, offering TV shows, movies and
wireless Internet access to passengers
who download a company app on their
personal smartphones or tablets.
In its quarterly report, capacity was
up 7.5 per cent compared with a year
ago, while revenue passenger miles
were up 5.5 per cent.
Cost per available- seat mile for the
airline improved to 12.65 cents, down
from 13.76 cents a year ago.
But revenue per available seat mile
slipped to 14.16 cents compared with
15.02 cents in the same quarter last
year.
Saretsky also said the company intends
to complete its search for a chief
financial officer by the end of the next
quarter, with interim CFO Candice Li
one of the candidates for the position.
