FORD EMPLOYEE JERUSALEM - Revellers dancing and singing through the streets of Jerusalem during the holy city's annual gay pride parade were left shrieking in pain and panic Thursday night, as an antigay extremist lunged into a group leading the march and stabbed six people, Israeli police and witnesses said. Police said the attacker, Yishai Schlissel, who was arrested at the scene for Thursday's attack, had been released from prison just three weeks ago, after serving a sentence for stabbing several people at the parade in 2005. Six people were wounded in the attack, two of them seriously, Eli Bin of Israel's emergency service said. The gay pride parade was proceeding as planned with party music, Israeli flags and rainbow- clad marchers wending their way through central Jerusalem's barricaded streets, under a heavy police presence. An Associated Press photographer witnessed the attacker enter the throng of people with his hand in his coat and within seconds raise a knife and begin stabbing people in the back. Police pounced on him and arrested him. The crowd's carefree cheers suddenly gave way to screams. Panic ensued, and a bloody woman fell to the ground, an Associated Press photographer at the scene said. A man with blood seeping from his back wandered around with a dazed look before collapsing. Another man with his shirt off also had blood dripping down his back. Medics quickly surrounded them both and applied pressure to stop the bleeding. Shocked revellers, some in tears, gathered along the sidewalk and hugged and comforted each other as ambulances and police on horses quickly arrived. On Thursday, media reports said Schlissel hid in a nearby supermarket and jumped out to attack the march when it passed nearby. Jerusalem police spokesman Asi Ahroni said there was a " massive presence" of police securing the parade but " unfortunately the man managed to pull out a knife and attack." A medic who treated the wounded at the scene, Hanoch Zelinger, said one woman was stabbed in the back, chest and neck, and was lying unconscious on the ground. Shaarei Tzedek Hospital said it was treating two victims with stab wounds, a man who was in serious condition and a woman in critical condition, both in their 20s. The parade continued after the wounded were taken for treatment, but in a far more sombre atmosphere. Media reported thousands of Jerusalem residents who had not initially participated in the parade joined in after the attack in solidarity. Jerusalem's parade is much smaller and more restrained than the annual gay pride march in the secular Tel Aviv, which was attended by some 100,000 revellers last month. - The Associated Press M OHAMED Fahmy's legal saga was drawn out further Thursday as an Egyptian court abruptly postponed a much- anticipated verdict in his widely denounced terror trial. The Canadian journalist - who was first arrested 19 months ago - expressed frustration at the delay, which will now see him return to a Cairo court Sunday. " It's just mind- boggling the way they continue to play with our emotions here," Fahmy told The Canadian Press. " It's very hard on everyone." Fahmy said it took hours to get official word on the postponement. The first indication something was amiss came when the doors to the court remained closed even as he and members of the media waited to attend the proceedings. Officers then told the group to move to the other side of the street. Fahmy, 41, said his lawyers have since confirmed the case is expected to be back in court Sunday, but there was speculation even that date could be pushed back as two judicial officials speaking on the condition of anonymity said the judge in the case was seriously ill. The delay means more anxious anticipation for Fahmy, who admitted a postponement of a verdict was not one of the outcomes he had prepared for. " I took a bag to court today with towels, a toothbrush, slippers... just in case I was sentenced," he said. Canada's minister of state for consular affairs said the government was calling on Egypt to use " all the tools at its disposal" to resolve Fahmy's case. " We are deeply concerned over Mr. Fahmy's current situation and disappointed by the continued delay in his trial," Lynne Yelich said in a statement. " We ask that all branches of the Egyptian government work together in a concerted manner to address the situation of Mr. Fahmy." Fahmy's troubles began in December 2013, when he was working as the Cairo bureau chief for Qatar- based satellite news broadcaster Al Jazeera English. He and two colleagues were abruptly arrested and charged with a slew of offences, including supporting the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood, a banned organization affiliated with ousted Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi, and with fabricating footage to undermine the country's national security. The trio maintained their innocence throughout, but after a trial that was internationally decried as a sham, they were found guilty and sentenced to prison terms. A successful appeal, however, led to a new trial being ordered. One of the three men - Australian Peter Greste - was suddenly allowed to leave Egypt under a law that allows for the deportation of foreign nationals convicted of crimes. Fahmy gave up his dual Egyptian citizenship while behind bars in the hopes he could follow the same path, but that didn't happen. He was, however, granted bail in February shortly after his second trial got underway. - The Canadian Press, The AP Canadian journalist still awaits his fate Six stabbed during gay pride parade in Jerusalem Verdict in Cairo delayed until Sunday By Diana Mehta Mohamed Fahmy: frustrated by delay A_ 16_ Jul- 31- 15_ FP_ 01. indd A16 7/ 30/ 15 8: 53: 25 PM ;
