O NE of the interesting things about
working at Health Links - Info
Sant is that it often provides
me with a barometer of the health
and well- being of
people living in our
city.
For example,
I always know
when the influenza
season has arrived
because our
nurses at Health
Links, Manitoba's
telephone health
information service,
start receiving
more calls about aches, pains and
fever.
Now, with summer well underway
and the temperature rising, we're
starting to get more calls about heatrelated
illness, such as heatstroke and
dehydration; conditions that can be
accompanied by symptoms such as
headache, nausea and dizziness.
The advice we provide to callers
depends on the circumstances. But the
most important thing anyone needs to
know about heat- related illnesses is
how quickly they can sneak up on you.
A colleague of mine offers a perfect
example of how this can happen. She
recently came down with heat exhaustion
while attending an outdoor
festival. Despite staying in the shade
and drinking plenty of water, the 30
C temperature with high humidity
caused her to feel dizzy, nauseous and
disoriented.
Quick treatment from festival firstaiders
included application of cool water
to bring down her internal temperature,
along with more water to drink and a
place to rest until she felt better.
The message here is if you are
spending a lot of time outdoors on a
hot day, make sure you shade yourself
from the sun with an umbrella or a
wide- brimmed hat with lots of ventilation
( to allow the sweat on your head to
evaporate), wear loose- fitting, breathable,
light- coloured clothing, and
remember to wear sunscreen to limit
exposure to ultraviolet rays.
Drink plenty of water ( that's the
best liquid) before you feel thirsty, and
avoid alcoholic beverages, as they will
increase the amount of water lost by
the body.
Certain people are more prone to being
affected by heat and humidity than
others. Older adults, infants and young
children, people with chronic conditions,
such as breathing difficulties or
heart problems, and anyone who works
in the heat, may be more vulnerable,
even if they are healthy.
Those who play strenuous outdoor
sports such as tennis or soccer, or who
jog, should try to get their game on in
the cooler parts of the day.
If you are exerting yourself, you
lose fluids through sweat, and the high
heat and humidity amplify this effect.
If you are unable to replace the fluids
as quickly as you are losing them, you
are at high risk for dehydration, which
can put strain on your heart and other
organ functions.
You also are losing electrolytes in
your sweat, so be sure to have a sports
drink with electrolytes at hand while
playing.
It's important to remember some
medications can increase your risk,
so make sure to ask your doctor, nurse
practitioner or pharmacist whether the
medication you're taking affects your
ability to cope with heat.
Heat exhaustion can quickly lead
to a more critical illness: heatstroke.
Heatstroke is the most serious type of
heat illness and requires urgent medical
attention. With heatstroke, a person
may have a core body temperature
that is above 40 C. Symptoms may
include red, hot and dry skin, no sweat,
rapid and weak pulse, confusion or
disorientation, rapid breathing, erratic
behaviour, seizure, coma or a partial
or complete loss of consciousness.
If someone you know experiences
signs of heatstroke, call 911 immediately.
While waiting for help to arrive,
immediately move the person to a cool
place, sponge large areas of the skin
with cool water and fan the person as
much as possible. The longer a person's
body temperature is above 40 C,
the greater the likelihood of permanent
effects or death.
What is considered " too hot" can
vary from person to person depending
on a variety of factors, such as age,
chronic conditions and the level of
activity on a hot day. It is important
to stay aware of weather conditions,
listen to your body's cues and take
proper precautions on a hot or humid
day.
