OPEN SAT. 9 AMTO 6 PM CLOSED MON. AUG. 3/ 15 A RIZONA Marinko, Jenel James, Tom Kharga and Jonathan Chipalata are looking forward to mid- August. That's when the four teens, along with 45 classmates from Gordon Bell High School, head to Camp Cedarwood near Lac du Bonnet for a jam- packed week of summer fun, including activities they've never tried or even heard of. The massive trip was orchestrated by Gordon Bell guidance counsellor Anna Gall through the Sunshine Fund. Tom, who turned 14 on Wednesday, said he'd never seen anything like the video he was shown of kids tubing at the camp. He moved to Winnipeg from Nepal in 2011, and said he wants to be a famous soccer player when he grows up. He said he's not nervous about going to camp for the week without his family, except for one key part - meeting new people. But when Tom heads to camp Aug. 16, he'll be flanked by friends - a different kind of family, he said, adding, " I'm going to camp with my family, because your friends support ( you) with everything." One of those friends is Jonathan, 13. His favourite subject is social studies, he said, because he likes learning about the world and other cultures. When the conversation turned to tubing, he piped in. " That was crazy," he said, referring to the video shown to the kids by camp director Brennan Cattani on a visit to the school. Neither of the kids had heard of tubing before, but after a vivid description of what they'd seen, Tom and Jonathan agreed it just made them want to try it more. When Jonathan found out he was going to get to go to camp through the Sunshine Fund, he said " at first, I couldn't believe it." Ever since, he's been watching and re- watching Camp Cedarwood videos on YouTube and showing them off to his sisters, telling them " this is going to be my camp." For Jenel, 13, this will be her first Manitoba summer. When the teen arrived in Canada last December, she was greeted by a brutal Winnipeg winter. Now, she's excited about camp because she loves to challenge herself. " It's a chance to learn how to participate more in teamwork and have more fun and learn how to socialize, and meet new people," she said, adding she's looking forward to developing new hobbies, and seeing some of Canada's wilderness. Arizona, 14, said to her, camp " means that we can build strong relationships with our friends, and know them better." She said the biggest thing they will learn is " how it is to be without electronics." They said they'll miss Facebook. If you'd like to help send kids to camp, send cheques to the Winnipeg Free Press Sunshine Fund at 302- 960 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R3G 0R4. You can donate in person using cash, Visa or MasterCard. Or you can go to mbcamping. ca and follow the Canada- Helps donation link.
