The following movies have been previously reviewed by Free Press movie critic Randall King, unless otherwise noted.
NOW PLAYING
ANT- MAN
Grant Park, Kildonan Place, McGillivray, Polo Park, St. Vital,
Towne. PG. 115 minutes.
The latest hero of the Marvel Universe to hit the big screen,
Scott Lang ( Paul Rudd) is a con artist drafted by a genius
scientist ( Michael Douglas) to don an incredible shrinking
suit to prevent a megalomaniac ( Corey Stoll) from controlling
the teeny realm of inner space. The movie arrives with
a relatively obscure hero at a time when we're all suffering
a bit of comic- book- movie fatigue. It might have helped if
director Peyton Reed demonstrated a little more directorial
zest, but this registers as merely a smooth- running cog
in the Marvel machine. s s s
INSIDE OUT
Polo Park. G. 95 minutes.
This Pixar animated feature creates anthropomorphized
emotions to show the psychological workings at play when
11- year- old Riley moves with her mom and dad to a new
home in San Francisco. Amy Poehler voices a joyous Joy
and Lewis Black is on the nose as Anger, but you have to
especially respect the portrayal of Sadness ( voiced with a
tender comedic touch by Phyllis Smith), not as a negative
or bad character but as a necessary member of the emotional
team. She's an effective repudiation of a dominant
feel- good culture that would love to see her medicated out
of existence. s s s s
IRRATIONAL MAN
Grant Park. PG. 95 minutes.
Written and directed by Woody Allen, this drama stars
Joaquin Phoenix as an unruly philosophy professor who
finds an unlikely - and criminal - purpose to his life
while carrying on successive affairs with a married fellow
prof ( Parker Posey) and a besotted student ( Emma Stone).
Even an actor as compelling as Phoenix can't smooth out
the bumps of this screenplay. These include the awkward
age difference between Stone and Phoenix ( practically
de rigueur in most Allen films) and a climax that feels
especially untrue and dishonest . s s 1/ 2
JURASSIC WORLD
Polo Park, St. Vital. PG. 125 minutes.
Set 22 years after the events of Jurassic Park , the theme
park is now a 10- year- old success story until corporate
suits compel the park's operations manager ( Bryce Dallas
Howard) to create a genetic hybrid monster, to the consternation
of a raptor trainer ( Chris Pratt) obliged to save
the day. In its scale and visual effects, it feels like a proper
sequel to Jurassic Park , except the characters are thin and
the first film's critique of scientific hubris just gets lost in
the rote blockbuster action. s s s
KURT COBAIN: MONTAGE OF HECK
Cinematheque. 14A. 133 minutes.
This made- for- HBO documentary manages to be both an
artistic statement and a compelling investigation into the
life of Nirvana frontman and rock martyr Kurt Cobain, who
killed himself at the age of 27 in 1994. Executive- produced
by Frances Bean Cobain, the daughter he left behind, the
film is a searing, honest examination of the Cobain enigma
that doesn't answer all the questions, but provides previously
unseen insights through an examination of Cobain's
art. s s s s
A LEGO BRICKUMENTARY
Bandwidth. G. 93 minutes.
Narrated by Jason Bateman, this doc examines the history
of the snap- together toy that has also emerged as a Hollywood
player in the wake of The Lego Movie's box- office success.
While the message about individual creativity within
a universal form is inspiring, it does get repetitive cycling
through each individual example. One of the most relevant
and interesting points is developed toward the end: that
Lego itself is a closed mathematical system, but also a
universal language that can unite across borders, cultures
and abilities. s s s ( Reviewed by Katie Walsh )
MAGIC MIKE XXL
Polo Park. 14A. 116 minutes.
Mike ( Channing Tatum) has retired from the malestripping
gig until a convention - and a reunion with his
old touring buddies - draws him back into the realm of
fleshy frolic. Unlike the film's male stars, the narrative is
shapeless, but it's still sneaky fun, especially given that, at
its heart, it's a contemporary iteration of a movie musical.
If Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly could see how the dance
movie has evolved in the 21st century, they'd be pirouetting
in their graves. s s s
MINIONS
Kildonan Place, McGillivray, Polo Park, St. Vital, Towne. PG.
91 minutes.
This animated prequel to Despicable Me tells the backstory
of those yellow, capsular villain- enablers when they go to
work for fiendish super- villain Scarlet Overkill ( voiced by
Sandra Bullock), a chic gal intent on world domination.
The secret of this film's success is co- directors Kyle Balda
and Pierre Coffin have a superb sense of the sight gag, very
much beholden to the classic Warner Bros. ' toons of Bugs
Bunny and the Road Runner. Also distinguishing it from
the Disney/ Pixar fold, they also have a delightful sense of
naughtiness. s s s
MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: ROGUE NATION
Grant Park, Kildonan Place, McGillivray, McGillivray VIP, Polo
Park, Polo Park Imax, St. Vital, Towne. PG. 131 minutes.
Impossible Mission Force agent Ethan Hunt ( Tom Cruise)
attempts to prove the existence of an evil, mirror- image
version of the IMF accessible only through a beguiling
Brit agent ( Rebecca Ferguson) of ambiguous loyalty. One
catches a certain whiff of desperation as the movie goes
through tried and true Mission Impossible motions, such
as Ethan breaking into an ultra- secure computer facility
( see the first movie), participating in a thrilling, breakneck
motorcycle chase ( see the second movie) and being blackmailed
by the villain to employ his talents to do his bidding
( see the third movie). s s 1/ 2
MR. HOLMES

An aged Sherlock Holmes ( Ian McKellen) retires to a country
house where he battles a failing memory to recall the haunting

collaborated with McKellen on Gods and Monsters , offers up
a poignant closing chapter to the Holmes canon, touching on
themes of love and legacy. s s s 1/ 2
PAPER TOWNS
Grant Park, Kildonan Place, McGillivray, Polo Park, St. Vital,
Towne. PG. 109 minutes.
A shy high school student ( Nat Wolff) is enlisted for a
night of pranks by beautiful, popular girl Margo ( Cara
Delevingne) only to be baffled when she disappears the
following day, leaving cryptic clues as to her whereabouts.
There's something incredibly satisfying about a well- executed
high school film that hits all the right John Hughesinspired
sweet spots. Concerned with the miracles, myths
and mysteries that come with the end of high school, the
film self- consciously engages with genre tropes, while also
updating and evolving the formula. s s s 1/ 2 ( Reviewed

PIXELS
Grant Park, Kildonan Place, McGillivray, Polo Park, St. Vital,
Towne. PG. 105 minutes.
Adam Sandler stars as a former video- game champ
recruited with some other geeks ( including Peter Dinklage
and Josh Gad) to do battle when alien invaders attack
earth in the guise of ' 80s arcade superstars including
Donkey Kong and Pac- Man. The core concept is clever,
but its execution in the hands of director- producer Chris
Columbus and star- producer Sandler is a mess. This
disappointing comedy falls apart before it begins. s

SOUTHPAW
Grant Park, McGillivray, Polo Park , St. Vital, Towne . 14A. 124
minutes.
Jake Gyllenhaal stars as a light- heavyweight champion
boxer who loses it all after suffering a personal tragedy
and must fight his way back to the top with assistance
from a skeptical trainer ( Forest Whitaker). Director Antoine
Fuqua layers the movie with the foul- mouthed, corrupt,
violent grunge of the contemporary boxing world, but
squeegee away the scum, and this is a very old- fashioned
movie about a troubled man's fight for redemption and
love. s s s
SUNSHINE SUPERMAN
Bandwidth. PG. 100 minutes.
This documentary examines the large life of Carl Boenish,
the father of the BASE- jumping movement, a skydiver who
developed the phenomenon of " foot- launched human
flight." The footage is striking, the memories of the man
are vivid, and the finale - a tribute to the next phase of
BASE jumping with winged suits - is stunning. s s s

TERMINATOR: GENISYS
Polo Park. 14A. 126 minutes.
This fifth Terminator movie riffs on James Cameron's first
two films in the series, reimagining the 1984 meeting of
Sarah Connor ( Emilia Clarke), her would be saviour from
the future Kyle Reese ( Jai Courtney) and, of course, the
metal man of the title ( Arnold Schwarzenegger). The film
pretends the last two Terminator movies never happened,
a good thing, and reconfigures timelines so elaborately,
it will have nerds scurrying for their blackboards to make
sense of it all. The result is a weirdly playful reboot that
makes good use of the aged Arnie, but doesn't approach
the awesome invention of the movies to which it pays
homage. s s 1/ 2
TRAINWRECK
Grant Park, McGillivray, McGillivray VIP, Polo Park, St. Vital,
Towne. 14A. 125 minutes.
Amy Schumer wrote and stars in this comedy from Judd
Apatow playing a hard- partying, relationship- averse
magazine writer thrown for a loop when a nice sports
doctor ( Bill Hader) falls in love with her. The laughs may
come with an apology, but you believe the character's
transformation by romantic love, chiefly because Schumer
and Hader are wonderful together. s s s s ( Reviewed by

VACATION
Grant Park, Kildonan Place, McGillivray, McGillivray VIP, Polo
Park, St. Vital, Towne. 14A. 99 minutes.
A chip off the old blockhead, Rusty Griswold ( Ed Helms)
emulates his idiot dad Clark ( Chevy Chase) and drags his
wife and kids to the theme park Walley World with the
desperate intent on bringing his family closer together.
This sequel/ reboot to National Lampoon's Vacation ( 1983)
often gets too disgusting for its own good, but still delivers
the required laughs, without enduring too much of Chevy
Chase ( he has an extended cameo) and his relentless mugging.
