The countrywide initiative launched by Jewish advocacy group B’nai Brith calls on high school students to write and illustrate a book meant for elemen- tary students. The theme of the book must reflect positive values that can be used to help the reader’s community. The top prize of $3,000 (plus $500 each for the winner’s school and supervising teacher) went to Sam Mer- cier, a Grade 11 student at St. Maurice School in Winnipeg, whose story My Name is Sam and Yes I Can! will be professionally published and copies will be donated to public libraries and elementary schools within the local community. Mercier, who has autism, said his love for art inspired him to enter the contest. The second- and third-prize win- ners (taking home $1,500 and $500, re- spectively) were My Lovely Flowers, by Chiara Cacho (Garden City Collegiate, Winnipeg) and Ricky and the Squirrels, by Ayala Kaganovitch (Vincent Massey Collegiate, Winnipeg). “I think they are all winners, other than it being a competition and we need to select three top ones, we really want to celebrate them all,” B’nai Brith na- tional program co-ordinator Adriana Glikman said Wednesday. “And hope- fully, in the future, we can publish more than one.” The first competition took place in Manitoba in 2019, and its success in- spired organizers to launch the pro- gram in Edmonton, Hamilton and Montreal. The California Highway Patrol urged drivers to turn on their head- lights and slow down. Social media was filled with photos of the unusual sky, and many people complained that their cellphone cameras weren’t ac- curately capturing the golden hues. While satellites show a towering band of smoke hovering along the coast, there was little scent of smoke and the air quality index did not reach unhealthy levels. That’s because fog drifting from the Pacific Ocean was sandwiched between the smoke and ground. And smoke particles above the marine layer were acting like a filter, scattering blue light and only allowing yellow, orange and red light to reach the ground, said Ralph Bor- rmann, a spokesman for the Bay Area Air Quality Management District. The smoke blocked out so much sun- light that a forecast for temperatures to climb to 32 C instead dipped to 15.5 C as though “we’re in perpetual mor- ning without the sun to help us warm up,” said Drew Peterson, a meteor- ologist with the National Weather Ser- vice’s Bay Area office. Some of the smoke settled in San Francisco Bay and formed a 24-kilo- metre trail of ash along the tidal line, the U.S. Coast Guard said.
